Gas prices to expensive? Did you know that electric cars are becoming more and more efficient, as well as gas engines and hybrids? There's the BMW i8 which is a hybrid sports car that gets around 93 MPG. Volkswagen made a vehicle that gets over 250 MPG. Natural gas is also a possibility, already many city buses and other government vehicles run on natural gas.
Keep in mind that the transition between gas to electric is not something that will happen immediately and fossil-fuel power will still remain the main source of energy in at least the United States.

Ik. You just focused on the first part of my post though. But also, seeing as the majority of people travel to far each day to ride on a bike, I still don't think most people will use bikes instead of cars. Also, on a bike, you lug your 7 or less year old kids to school.
