Author Topic: Proof that far fetched add-ons are not all stupid  (Read 3311 times)

So way back in 2011, there was this post:
http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=153791.0
It had very mixed reviews but there was a pretty clear message by most stating it wasn't going to happen.

A year later we get this:
http://forum.returntoblockland.com/dlm/viewFile.php?id=4103
Which is basically what was being asked for in the first forum post and has become one of the most popular brick-packs to date.

That is all i wanted to say

The reason people said it wasn't going to happen wasn't because it was impossible... Not sure what you're trying to prove here

While the physical shape itself is obviously easily possible, making the building grid smaller is not, which is the point people were trying to make in that topic.

You can make 1/3 width bricks easily
But because of the brick grid you cant adjust the placement of the bricks to match the 1/3 size. The brick grid system is hard coded into the engine and can not be touched by addons

Dont make claims about whether something is possible or not if you dont understand the workings of the engine

What about vehicles and weapons?

I was pointing more to the idea that some people thought it'd be a stupid mod to attempt to make and wouldn't ever be used by the majority.

Impossibility wasn't based upon what the engine will allow but rather what the people would invest into.

maps aren't coming back.

This
If you wanted to make, say, a 1/3 width brick with normal height and, length, technically it would be possible by making a 'side' and 'middle' version, and then hacking the 'no brick inside a break' limitation. But its just a pain to manage multiple versions of the same brick, especially if you wanted to make smaller fractions

maps aren't coming back.
I missed the whole idea around why they stopped doing that, wouldn't it be possible to rescript the areas of the game that make it and maps incompatible?

That topic is a terrible example of what you're trying to say. Pretty sure that people knew that it was possible to make a brick look like it occupied less space than it does, and the guy who made the suggestion suggested bricks that could exist on the brick grid as true 1/2 or 1/3 size bricks, instead of the mod you linked where there is a dummy space the brick occupies.
I don't know why you wouldn't just use the buildable vehicles topic, it's a much better example of what you're trying to say...

You also wouldn't be able to load them.

I tend not to fare well with making topics outside of the gallery zone. Now granted you are correct in saying he did want a different grid system, but I talked to the OP after Vertical print bricks came out and he said it was pretty much what he was looking for.

That's not really the point I'm trying to make.

Yea I understand that, this was the first example i could find of a mod idea that was dissed for the most part but became a success later. I know i will get a lot of hate for it but i don't really use the BL forums that often and when i do it's 99% of  the time for looking at builds. So i did become unaware of any other posts relating to topics such as this one. I'll look around more before posting these kind of threads.

on a side note
bounty hunta is always right. That is a fact.
That quote is just a joke, please do not take it seriously
