Author Topic: Does anyone else call flip-flops "thongs"?  (Read 2797 times)

My people call them slippers though. I haven't seen that mentioned in this thread yet.

thongs are underwear for women

and a lot of people i know call them sandals

why the forget would you call them anything other than sandals
But they aren't sandals. Sandals have a strap, flip-flops don't.
That's literally the only difference.

Why are sandals called sandals? Why not flip-flops with straps?

Why are sandals called sandals? Why not flip-flops with straps?
Sandals came first, so they kept their name.

Flip-flops were originally called sandals, but their name was changed becuse they made a flip-flop sound when you walked around in them. This does not happen with sandals because they have a strap. This is how you differentiate between the two.

OP's question still remains, why on EARTH would they be called a thong?

Etymology online shows how it developed
thong (n.)
Old English þwong "thong, narrow strip of leather (used as a cord, band, strip, etc.)," from Proto-Germanic *thwangaz (cf. Old Norse þvengr), from PIE root *twengh- "to press in on, to restrain." As a kind of sandal, first attested 1965; as a kind of bikini briefs, 1990.

because you wear thongs on your feet, and a thong on your body

it's always used plural unless you for some reason have lost a thong out of your thongs
What next, are you going to start calling sneakers underwears? Are you going to call running shoes bras?

Un-flip-flops then.

read my edited post, "As a kind of sandal, first attested 1965; as a kind of bikini briefs, 1990."

It's no different than short being a measure of length or distance, and shorts being something you wear. unless you're handicapped, it's pretty basic.

I have never heard them called thongs before.

When i Google thongs i only get underwear. A vast majority call them flip-flops. However i know that in Hawaii they call them "slippahs"

A vast majority call them flip-flops.

This is clearly relating to the footwear and nothing else.
