I have never heard them called thongs before.

When i Google thongs i only get underwear. A vast majority call them flip-flops. However i know that in Hawaii they call them "slippahs"

This, if you Google image search "thongs" you'll get softcore research underwear, not shoes.

Can't say I've ever actually heard them called "thongs" here, but I was aware that it was one name for them.

I prefer flip-flops as a name. Onomatopoeia is funny.

I was aware that 'thong' is a term for flip-flops, but I consider it equivalent to calling a cat a pusillanimous individual. I don't look at my cat and say, "I'd like to rub that pusillanimous individual," and I don't point at flip-flops and tell someone to put on their thongs.
