Author Topic: Learning to model (Updated, Stinger prototype 2. Taking name suggestions)  (Read 3258 times)

I was unsatisfied with my awkward crayon gun, so I started over for my missile launcher and came up with this.
While I get to work on coding it and adjusting the model to fit the blockhead, tell me how it looks! I'm not getting much feedback on the aesthetics. Assuming the code is good, does this look worthy of a release? Stat wise, going with the wasp/bee theme, it will be a fast moving missile, with very high direct damage, but very small blast radius and very slow fire rate. I wanted to make this because I always felt there was something missing in the currently available ordnance . In addition, I plan to make ALL of my weapons and vehicles red vs blue friendly, meaning I never use red or blue in the weapon itself.

Although I started out modeling a Mac-10, I don't plan to create any real world weapons for release. There's a couple dozen other people better suited to do that. My plan going forward is making everything from scratch, using my own designs. Give it a little personality. Speaking of, I am also now taking suggestions for the name of this. "Stinger" is too obvious and there's a few other weapons named that already in block world.

i wish i knew how to model

you can use sketchup for blockland wep models?

That's really good for one of your first weapons.

no
it's been proven before that they add unnecessary faces, and for some models it got to the point where it just crashed blockland trying to load it. If you seriously need to model in Sketchup you will have a ton of fun importing it into blender and removing all the faces.

Never had this problem before. Also removing faces is not that hard.

If you can do it in sketchup you can do it in Milkshape or Blender just fine.

Just download blender and do it, you'll be making models in no time.

there's like a million tutorials out there it should only be a matter of dedication

I've tried Blender, but it wasn't as easy to learn. Still haven't quite gotten the hand of making models from scratch with it. But at the same time I know I have to make the change. My problem with Blender is I can never find a good tutorial that just tells me how to start making my own model. Though that might just be my fault...

Either way! That model up dere is what I managed in sketchup completely from scratch. Is it blocko enough? Anything weird looking? I plan on doing overly generic guns like that, but also designing my own. I won't start working on any others until I can either figure out Blender, or figure out how to compromise sketchup into working. I don't mind a little extra effort as long as the result is just as good.

Blockland has changed, and so has the programs used to make things with it.
We need a new, complete tutorial. Not a 4 year old jumpy "uhh" fest.

milkshape is still old as ever....

Blockland has changed
not really

yea, but were still stuck using the old versions.

I'm watching these tutorial videos... The first one has nothing to do with modeling it seems, but on the second one, is modeling in blender REALLY just placing a square down and squishing it into the shape you want? Is there no way to manually draw the model or some other method? That seems very odd.

Edit: And can someone tell me which Blender version I should use? The newest version is very different looking from 2009
