makes me wonder why they make sugar the culprit of everything though. they make it sound so bad like if you touch it you will become the next Riddler.

It's a lazy attack on obesity, ironically.
It's easier to make sugar out to be horrible and terrible and that we should all avoid it, than it is to say that you can have nice sugary things so long as you balance out how many of them you have a day, and that you eat enough of other types of food and you get ample exercise.
When people cut something out of their diet solely to lose weight then they're avoiding the actual thing they need to do.
Which is to balance your diet and exercise. But that's beyond many people because it involves thought and action.
It's easier to just say "I'm not going to eat any sugar" or "I'm going to cut out carbs" than it is to plan what you should eat and make the time to go for a jog, or a cycle or a trip to the gym, or to go and have a swim.
