the .gif file extention worked for me when I had issues with it uploading
Crtl+F5 doesn't work all the time, stop saying that

My problem earlier was from my size being too large.  Make sure to compress the file to about 3kb or so.

So I just performed an experiment where I tried to upload a 5 x 5 png file as my avatar. It did not change. I'm starting to think that .png files are not supported anymore.
