Author Topic: Need some advice in regards to game studios  (Read 1109 times)

So for the past few years I've been thinking about what I want to do in life, as I am an adult now, I have really come to realise what I would enjoy doing using practical skills I already own. I've always wanted to create a gaming franchise/studio to manage and produce my own online RPG's for retail.
I have loads of ideas of different types of RPG's, the ones that wouldn't particularly work in Blockland. I enjoy managing a production team and creating lore/ideas surrounding the game.
So I've had this idea in my head for a while and I really don't know what to do. I understand some forumers here have created some 2D games, but I really want to create a real company producing real games, not just indie ones.
So today I had a long car ride with my dad. He is a successful businessman who owns a big business (I wont go too much into it) and so I described to him the process of how I would create a server, finding help and producing an rpg. I have never really talked to my family about Blockland, but he seemed very interested in the management aspect of the game, and said that the organisational skills that I had were good, and I should persue it in my dream of creating a studio.
Obviously creating a company means you need to get financial support and backing, so I think maybe he may be able to do that.
I have to admit, I know little about actually creating an RPG outside of Blockland. I do realise that companies such as Bethesda are multi-billion$, and thats not what I am looking to make. Just a regular sized online RPG game. I was just wondering where I can find more information about that?

I will probably lock this topic soon, after typing all that I feel none of it made much sense.

tl;dr
I want to make an online RPG, how do I do it?

First you have to think of ideas that would suck people money in order to get rich.

First off you need to learn how to script/code.

make a few indie titles to get a bit more funding and build a portfolio

I am not interested in the coding side. I am interested in the producing side, creating the ideas behind the game, and managing the people working on the game.

it would be faster but not really, you just need to hire people who can do that for you.

get some sort of experience that people can take seriously then get a sponsor, you'll need to convice snobby rich people you have talent
build a portfolio

OH.

Okay well first off you should find something that wouldn't have been though of. Maybe some sort of thing where you play a simple peasant that was given a power from a dying God and needs to save the world or something from an evil presence.

Also it must be 2D.

You hire me as your lead programmer.

Here is my porfolio.

You can't just jump into management, that's not how the world works. You have to do productive work before doing anything else.

Nah, you totally can jump into management. You just need investors.

Yeah, and for those you generally need to have product to show that you're a good investment. Same issue.

Or a good idea with a good business plan. The people that start up companies that work on cancer treatments don't already have a cure for cancer to stand behind them saying "I'm a good investment!"

In the game industry that's far harder to pull off, since it's a practical thing that produces actual definite things rather than pharmaceuticals which churns out more ideas/works in progress than actual products.
Also, most important point to note: Furdle.

you usually dont start a game studio immediately like that. you gather up a group of friends and start making a bunch of stuff then try to make it big and get a studio.

Also, games cost virtually nothing to produce. There's no capital costs associated with starting a game development firm unless you actually rent space and buy computers for your workers to use. Programmers are also cheap to hire, you can pay them like $10/h and still get a quality product.
