yes.
I disagree. They are making progress in energy storage systems and research into nano materials.

if we define a "small time frame" as one day, then no. you are absolutely wrong. using solar energy to power stuff is like trying to power things with a flashlight. not to mention the earth's atmosphere plus cloud coverage absorbs a great deal of the sun's light before it can reach the surface. the amount of energy you can get in a day from mining coal is much greater than the amount of energy you can get in a day of "solar farming" from even a mile-wide solar panel farm
What are you talking about? You mentioned the raw amount of energy that radiates from the sun, that is everything that the Earth catches whether it is absorbed or reflected or whatever else. Don't blame me because you didn't say what you actually meant in that you were talking about the net energy available to be captured by solar panels. Then I went so far as to agree with you that actual solar panel energy collection is not viable on a large scale so why are you arguing this?

it is every day. the energy that reaches earth from the sun in a day that can be harnessed is far smaller in amount than what we extract each day from nuclear power
Again here you are changing your wording just so you can argue meaninglessly. I agree the amount we can actually collect is far lower than that which can be produced via fossil fuels and nuclear.

EDIT: My apologies, you did say Earth's surface in your original post and it is I who misread that section. I still don't think researching the technology is a waste of time though.

this statement alone makes me dislike you even more.

Lets just build a dyson sphere around the sun

You know, solar panels don't cost $100, and filling the ocean with solar panels would be really harmful for the US' budget...

what budget?
 :cookieMonster:

what budget?

I know they're on huge debt, but making the whole ocean a solar farm would give them what, twice as much debt?

Technically the point of science isn't to learn things with the direct goal of creating a viable energy source. Researching photovoltaic cells and learning how they work better is its own reward.

no one ever planned to cover any entire ocean with solar panels

you see, there's this thing called funding. theoretical ideals and practical execution are very different.

Yeah, duh. I'm just being idealistic for the fun of it.

how about if every house had solar panel on them but the power went directly to the power station and was evenly distributed among the city along side with power gained from other means. then the power company would pay a small fee to have there solar panels on your roof. this would only work if the fee was at least 25% less than what you pay the power company for your monthly bill. also they couldn't place solar panels on everyone's home because of those damn red necks stealin' the power from them shiny panels on their roof.

Converting algae into fuel is more practical than putting solar panels everywhere.

you can't whine about people harassing you over your overbearing christianity if you're going to harass people over their not at all overbearing "atheism"

Calm down people, there is no need for arguement between two overbearing idealogies.
