Author Topic: what are the restraints for a forum avatar  (Read 589 times)

as far as I can tell avatars have to be 75x75 and that's it, but I can't change my avatar for some reason

is there a limit to the amount of times you can change it per specified time period? certain file extension? size? new resolution?

i've been trying to change it but it won't change. i have tried clearing the cache as well. my first avatar worked but the next didn't.

The avatar uploader's been broke for a while now, it's VEEEERRY picky about what you upload and there's no telling what the problem is

I was recently able to upload this gif of the world's oldest bodybuilder from America's Funniest Home Videos.

Changing the image format usually works for a bit

I was able to properly upload my avatar after a few weeks of attempting, though

Apparantly it's some stupid thing by the dev team of SMF where images created by various image editing programs, including Photoshop are read as dangerous and therefore not uploaded, despite being perfectly safe. Their stupid suggestion is to use other programs instead of the massively popular and successful ones just because their program has a problem with it.

The dev team don't seem to give a stuff solely because they're releasing an entirely new SMF version, which is the cause of the problem since they pinched experimental code from that and used it to update these older versions without testing what it does.

if it's not changing for you, try pressing F5

I'm using paint.net. Should I try GIMP? I know MS Paint wouldn't hold transparency.

My current avatar was made in pdn so idk

I've honestly no idea which programs work better than others, or why some files get through and others.
From what I read the problem doesn't have a perfect solution.
Here's the link, by the way: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=513488.0

I can't quite recall if Paint.net has one, but if it has an option for "Saving for Web" then try using that.

I think until SMF Devs get to work there's not much I can suggest other than to try a bunch of things.
I hope it does work out though.

I uploaded this one a week ago and it finally changed yesterday
