Author Topic: Is it possible to recover a (possibly) corrupted video file?  (Read 6806 times)

I was playing gmod today for like 4 hours and recorded all of it using OBS. I was just about to end the recording but my PC froze, meaning I had to do a hard reset. When I try to open the video file it says:

"Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file."

It is 2.04 GB in size and that makes me think that some of it could still be recovered, maybe, if it is corrupted

I really dont want to lose this footage, so all good help is appreciated!

You could try VLC to view the uncorrupted parts of the video. Or atleast this will work in theory. VLC allowed me to view videos that weren't fully downloaded.

Opening it with VLC doesnt work. Nothing plays and the timer thing rapidly switches from "00:00" to "--:--"

If vlc wont play that stuff nothing will

Theres bound to be some way to recover it...right?

You could try to open it in an editing program, see if that works.

Trying to put it in Sony Vegas 12 brings up an error saying QuickTime isnt installed and then "the file format plugin for the specific format was not properly initialized"
Even though I can put in other videos with the same format (mp4) all recorded with OBS too

Pretty sure your files toast then.

This.

OP, have you tried buttering it?

Ah well. If it's gone, its gone. Nothing to get upset about

I'd rather have nutella on mine

I don't understand this foreign language.

I'm afraid his toasted file is in a deep jam.

You can't. The record needs to be written when the video ends. It didn't end so...

Update: I used Video Repair Tool and it kinda worked? The video is all pixellated and jumpy, the audio is all sped up and cuts out often. It's unusable, but surely this means it can be recovered with a good tool

Edit:
Here's what it looks like
