I think if dogs weren't totally helpless, I'd give them first place. Cats can at least use common sense (stereotype obviously not all cats are smart) to make their way around defects in schedule. They usually don't make a big stink if they miss a meal since their diet varies more and they can just go find something. You also don't have to constantly open the door for them since they can "let themselves out" with a litter box. Cats also don't need to have tons of attention before either destroying something for the heck of it or going insane when people are around.
