Author Topic: Russian town assault [Map/Gamemode]  (Read 2189 times)

Welp, as a first relevant post, here's what i've been working on lately, a ww2 "realistic" DM map. Realistic in brackets becasue c'mon, it's blockland. The realistic part is going to be the squads layout/weaponry.

I've been working on this for the last 3 days, 1/2 buildings a day, so i don't burnout.
Everything is generally bad looking because almost everything is just a placeholder. Right now i want to finish building the map, playtest it, then make it better looking.

Map/Project. Sorry for crappy quality but my scanner is broken ATM (Link instead of embed because it's big and breaks the page layout)

What i built so far (Note the differences from project due to not having a perfect system to measure distance/scale them to blockland dimensions)

The orchard (Still trying to find a way to build good looking trees i can attach apples to)

The farmer's truck, parked next to the barn. The thing in the background is supposed to be a crane.

View of the farmer's barn from the field that sits in front of his house.

View of the train station from the barn's window

Inside of the barn

Squads are going to spawn in the same building (away from the actual battlefield), then will get to choose their team via teledoors, after choosing they'll be teleported to a second room where they will choose their role and thus loadout.

Any comment and suggestion is appreciated, criticism aswell. I'm new to building and i've got lots to learn.

Also, if anyone would like to help me playtest, just add me on steam, my nick is in my signature.

do you know what the word baseplate means

Use modter for terrain and get some addons. Spam Bricks for some buildings and make them half destroyed, so they work as a nice cover.

This is pretty nice and interesting idea! Good job!

doesn't look russian to be honest

As a matter of fact I do, but this being my first build I didn't know what would have looked better. Do you think that switching the terrain texture to the "blocky" one would do? Or should I coat the ground with plates?

I will look for it when I'm back home, thank you. I am actually not sure about destroyed buildings, I would prefer players blowing up buildings for cover with explosives or artillery strikes, or ordering a tank to blow a wall up. This doesn't mean that I won't make a destroyed version of the map later... Thanks for the tips!

I understand, just keep in mind this is WIP, I am going to add stuff! To make it more Russian looking I am going to add Cyrillic writing and URSS flags, and maybe a red army train, or some red army office/building. Do you have suggestions to help me theme the map?

Later today I am going to update the thread with my addons list, squad layouts and advancements

Also, this is somehow a Russian town, try to imitate it:

I tried, how does it look? I am planning on finishing the map without using Modter, just to have stuff to playtest with. Once the playtest map is done i'm going to try to make it look a lot better. I plan on putting the whole town on top of a small hill, maybe put a little river where the russian spawn is goign to be.

As for squad loadouts, i tried to make them balanced:

Red Army:

1 commander (PPs-43)
2 Submachinegunners (PPSH-41)
6 Riflemen (Mosin-Nagant, substituted with the Springfield because i couldn't find a model for the actual nugget)
1 AT soldier (Rocket launcher)
1 Support soldier (SVT-40, if i ever find a way to add a radio of sorts that can also call in bombings, he's the one getting it)

Panzergrenadiers:

1 Commander (STG 44)
1 Assistant Commander (STG 44)
4 Riflemen (Kar 98k)
2 Submachinegunners (MP40)
1 Machinegunner (Couldn't find a german Machinegun, so for now he's sticking to a ppsh41)
1 AT soldier (Rocket launcher)
1 Support soldier (MP28, Same as the Red army support)

Vehicles: Both squads will have tanks, i'm still unsure wether to keep them balanced or give one tank superiority, but i guess it's going to vary from game to game.
Germans will get two halftracks (Gravitycat's halftrack), if i can find a transport truck russians will get a couple too.

The railway like could use a little more work, but regardless, okay.
