Author Topic: Recommend a good hard drive replacement?  (Read 2628 times)

I need a good replacement hard drive. I tried two harddrives, not including a replacement for one, all of which are faulty to an extent. I've been loading the replacement one with data, but it is defective in that is is rougher and wearing down. Computer repair place that put it in for me said it wouldn't last, and considering the noises it makes when I try to use it sometimes, I'd be inclined to agree.

All that aside, I was thinking I'd just get an external harddrive to dump bulk files I care about but don't immediately need onto. Could anyone recommend one? I do have a budget, but firstly I want to see general opinion of good, LARGE external harddrives. From there, I'd narrow it down by price range and such.

This was kind of hastily written, but I have a bunch of things I need to do by the 25th, and I've been on 10GB of this 1TB drive for months now... Horrible, just HORRIBLE.

So are you asking for an external or internal drive?

If you wanted external I'd get a solid state 2.5" drive and put it in an enclosure.

Try getting an SSD. They have no moving parts and all, and they are faster.

How much disk space do you need?

Hmm, so there art portable externals and harddrives which can be outside the computer normally...? What's the explanation for that? You want to put things somewhere else but keep it nearby?

I heard weirdness about SSDs, but... I actually can't recall it. If you know any downsides, that would be good to know. But... 3-4TB perhaps...

The only real downsides to SSD's are that they're far more expensive per gigabyte and if you delete a file, you actually delete it after the recycling bin (this can also be seen as a pro, however). SSD's also can last much longer without the risk of mechanical failures (I don't know if a SSD will survive a computer being fried, however).

An external SSD? That is a huge waste of money. USB 2.0 doesn't come anywhere close to the max read and write speeds of a normal HDD, I don't think USB 3.0 does either.

I don't understand what does "rougher and wearing down" mean?

Well I'm like to do last minute data recovery if I screw up... I kinda accidentally deleted my Blockland code archive I've been upkeeping since like 2005, and barely saved 70% of it maybe... I haven't been brave enough to assess the damage. Luckily it was a separate archive from the actual add-ons folder, so broken files I managed to overwrite with ones from the game... But I did modify some files and not apply the changes to the game, so that data is plain lost... Point being, I'd like data recovery to some extent if I screw up.

Verses my original harddrive, it makes noises which sound rougher. It's not as bad as the other two, which is why I use it. But it'll make noisily loud noises at time, and I can tell it isn't liking itself... Plus, when I run it, I hear like... hard to put to text but similar to: "dun... dun dun... dun... dun dun..."

And all this comparing to my old harddrive which has not been nearly as noisy in any activity.

By all means get an external hard drive, but don't get an SSD. That would just be a huge waste of money. Does your computer have USB 3.0? If it does look around on newegg for a USB 3.0 external HDD. If you don't have USB 3.0 I think any decently rated external HDD will do then.

I doubt I have USB 3.0. I'm also open to internals actually... Really, anything actually reliable and up to maybe $250 or so...

he could use eSata/USB 3.0

USB 3.0 is technically around 4.8GB/s and SATA 3.0 is like 6.0GB/s

Unless you're transferring huge movies the speeds aren't really a huge deal.

Well since I don't believe I have USB 3.0, Flush's internal looks pretty good. Although the newegg page for it... does the offer end today? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236622

If at all possible, I'd highly recommend getting a smallish SSD to put your OS and startup programs on, and then redirect your documents and other program installations to a storage HDD. WD Black series is a very reliable and fast HDD, I recommend it. For an SSD, you could get something in this series of them (100-1000GB options available) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148693.

I've personally experienced no issues with my SSD, and it's superb at increasing system performance (there is a surprisingly large amount of things that are slowed down by drive wait times)

That's an interesting idea... Although I'd have no idea how to set that up. But it'd make a lot of sense.

4GB IDE SCSI DDRS Model. da best drive replacement in da worl!1!!!1 My SATA failed, my IDE failed but this stuff is still working.
