Author Topic: Facebook buys out Oculus VR  (Read 2416 times)

Hope you guys are having fun when I'm enjoying the Rift and you aren't because you were dumb enough to think that it being owned by Facebook would change anything about it.

Yeah, because EA owning Spore didn't change anything either right?

As I said in another thread:
Alright, you nigs need to start thinking about this from a business perspective rather than an anti-fb perspective.
If facebook even thinks about touching the development of the Rift and its software, they risk losing a good chunk (maybe even all) of that $2bil they spent on Oculus, in fact, the news alone suggests they may lose some of it unless they publicly promise not to touch the Rift. So unless they hate money, the Rift's development will continue as planned with zero intervention from FB other than earning some of the profits.

There's a vast ocean of difference between a game being bought by a developer/publisher and a method of displaying what's going on in our games being bought out by a social networking site. What are you expecting them to do? Add facebook integration to what is essentially a monitor strapped to your head so that they can post your achievements to your wall while you play games which have facebook integration? Get real

I am never giving Facebook money if I have the choice

Facebook ownership is purely a good thing for the Rift. This wasn't a hostile takeover by a competitor that's planning to scrap the project for the development schematics to make their own VR device better. As a result of its acquisition, Oculus will now have access to funds it never could have dreamed of before while being guided by the huge success of the people behind Facebook.

What could Facebook even do to it to forget it up? Add a Facebook splash screen when it boots up? Horrible stuff. The Rift is obviously ruined.

This is even more disturbing to me, as an Oculus Rift owner. Facebook has billions of dollars, so I think they could really help with funds, but they are not a gaming company. The Oculus Rift was built for video games, not for social media. I feel like they are dragging the company in the wrong direction, and while I think they could do a very good job of it, I feel like it will degrade the Oculus Rift's goal: to provide an atmospheric gaming experience.

If you're stupid enough to believe that Facebook would drop THIS much money on what is technically an unproven technology just to drive the development in a direction that would drive away the core user base and is also even more unproven than the technology is then I don't think anyone will be upset when you don't have a Rift and everyone else does.

forget facebook anyways
This, every loving product and every loving website has to not only have a facebook page, but has to constantly ask for likes on it as well.

Why the forget do I want to like a god dam flavor of pringles. How does this benefit either of us?

Reading is fun!

Invade privacy.

@Tokthree

He just said he has a rift though...

Why does everything cool have to be ruined quickly?

I don't think you read my post. I own a Rift already. I bought one like 6 months ago.

A devkit which is, as far as specifications are concerned, either inferior to the latest dev model, the eventual release or both. Doesn't change the overall message I was trying to deliver

It does. I already own a rift, and it is fully functional. It doesn't have x-y-z tracking like in the new test models, and that is really the only problem. You clearly haven't tried it, it's not that high quality, but your eyes cause you to look past the pixels.

The devkit is incredible, and not at all inferior to the new test models. People like to exaggerate. The test models allow you to lean over the edge of things, and things like that, but for the average gamer using the rift, you'll be sitting in a chair, and not leaning all over the place. It has more pixels, but the low pixel count doesn't bother me at all. I don't even notice them.

I am more educated on this issue than you are. I own an Oculus Rift, I have developed programs for it, and I've been following it's progress for over a year. Facebook is not the way this company needs to be going. I don't think the Rift can get worse, but I feel like Facebook won't deliver what fans are hoping for.
