a few battleships that can easily be replaced vs two cities. Did the Japanese target American civilians? Nope. Did the Japanese commit atrocities against civilians and soldiers? Yes. Did the US airstrike civilian and military targets? Yes. Both sides did bad stuff. War is hell, we learn from it so that we don't make the same mistakes, to over worship what those men did together is disillusionment.

ok yeah lets not forget the number of lives saved in the prevention of a full scale invasion of Japan, not to mention the fact that it ended the war before the soviets could do all their stuff they had planned for japan and stake their claim like they did in Germany/Poland.

I've read books on Oppenheimer and Feynman and they weren't researching nukes because they were bloodthirsty. It was a high-paying project involving some of the most famous and successful physicists alive at the time. Many of them went in to the project with no knowledge that it would end up being used to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
