Author Topic: Windows 8 BSOD - "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION"  (Read 494 times)

As of recent, I have been frequently receiving bluescreen errors with my Windows 8. After some time, my computer will randomly freeze and crash with the error "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION".

From what I have searched, this may be a problem with outdated drivers, but I have checked, and all of my drivers are updated. I have also kept my system regularly updated from the PC settings.

I have not been able to find a solution, and this has only been happening since today. Can someone please help?

Also, PLEASE do not post anything regarding how Windows 8 sucks, I'm sick of people who post that

No, "watchdog" is something Win8 has that is supposed to... terminate suspicious programs, I guess? I think that's what I read.

Method 1: Temporarily disable NOD32 Antivirus and scan your computer with Microsoft Defender Offline.

Step 1: Disable antivirus software or any security software installed on your computer temporarily.

Warning: Security software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Step 2: Scan and Run Windows Defender Offline.

Windows Defender Offline can help remove such hard to find malicious and potentially unwanted programs using definitions that recognize threats. Definitions are files that provide an encyclopedia of potential software threats. Follow the steps given in the link here. Download the appropriate file depending upon the bit version of your computer.

What is Windows Defender Offline?

Important: While scanning the hard drive if any bad sectors are found, the scanner tries to repair that sector, any data available on that might be lost.

The file is ntoskrnl.exe, and it's a core operating system file. If it's corrupt or missing you have a major problem. Quite often though, this error is a symptom of a different problem. You stated that you made no recent changes to hardware/software, but have you accounted for driver updates and updates to programs like your antivirus software? There is also the possibility that you may be experiencing a hardware failure, this is not uncommon in a new system.

d. Click on Advanced Options and then click on Troubleshoot.
e. Click on Automatic Repair and follow the prompted instructions.

Method 3: Uninstall the drivers from device manager and install from the Manufacturer’s website.

Follow the steps given here to uninstall the drivers from the device manager.

a) Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.
