Author Topic: "Tension" submitted to DrumNBass.net! Wish me luck!  (Read 1308 times)

As some of you may know, I make music. My latest piece was submitted to DrumNBass.net, but unfortunately did not make the cut. So I'm trying again. However, if I'm just going to recieve awful feedback from it, I'll won't bother. Which is why I'm posting it here before I submit it. And yes, I do still have a bit of mastering to do before it's ready, but try to ignore that.

Thanks!

Side note: Any of you DnB geeks might like to know that this is somewhat styled after Emperor's music.

i think it sounds a little too slow, it's something i'd play in the background as a kind of white noise while doing something else but it's nothing that it'd get up and dance to. the song doesn't have a whole lot of substance. don't get me wrong though, it sounds just fine musically (nothing out of tone, consistent rythym, etc).

i don't know how drumnbass.net works though, i hardly listen to drumnbass music myself, and i don't know what the requirements/norm of music is supposed to sound like. if what i just described is what you're going for, you've hit the nail on the head.

DO IT[/s]
i am questioning how you got the beginning and end of two different bbc formats, s and i aren't anywhere close to each other on the keyboard

I'm not sure what genre this is supposed to fit in to (right now it sounds like the background track to a flash game) but it doesn't really go anywhere as a composition. There's no 'point' and it's boring to listen to.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, this is rather slow for DnB - 160 BPM to be exact - and it's the slowest I've ever done DnB. Here's an example for the style of DnB I'm going for (note that this is a real producer signed to a record label, so it's a pretty good example): http://soundcloud.com/the_emperor/emperor-she-said-out-may-13th

Uh, I gave the genre. And I guess this style of drum and bass just isn't your thing. That's not really what I'm asking here, though.

And there is a point: to be enjoyable to the person listening to it - provided they actually like it (which you seem to not).

I do this all of the time, idk how it just happens

it reminds me a bit of aphex twin & a little bit of squarepusher

Let me put more detail into my review:

This piece has no direction or plan. It doesn't follow any sort of structure and like I said before, it never reaches a point or climax, and so the listener is basically left saying "so?" after listening to the whole thing. I don't think the issue is as much as me being unfamiliar with drums and bass and more you being unfamiliar with the basic rules of conventional music composition and structure.

Also, by 'point' I didn't mean purpose. Your piece never hits a climax or a conclusion. Every piece[with some exceptions, but yours isn't one], needs to have some sort of point it leads up to, even if it's not super dramatic or strong.

Bro... I've listened to 1,500+ DnB songs for the past 3 years, and I know for a fact that this piece is fairly normal in the DnB world. You said it yourself (and I agree with you) - it doesn't fit with conventional music. A lot of drum and bass is highly unconventional, so there is really nothing out of the ordinary. Please, if your going to argue a point with me, I don't mind - but at least educate yourself on the topic you're arguing first. Also, remember how highly suggestive a topic such as music is.

Anyway, it has gotten fairly positive feedback so far, so I fixed it up a tad more (made it tons louder too), and submitted it! It's also on my SoundCloud page here: http://soundcloud.com/lloid-1/tension

What did you use to make this song? It sounds really good :n

Created it with Nanostudio (I usually use the iOS version) and made it sound nicer in Audacity.

Yeah okay, music is subjective and convention doesn't matter, yada yada yada, but I do have actual experience.
