RAPE IS NOT A JOKE.
It is not some catchy hashtag. It is not something you call “awkward”.
It is a legitimate fear of every woman in this country. 1 in 5 women are loveually assaulted at one point in their lifetime. That means of Aunt Barb, Aunt Sue, Grandy, Mom, and me, statistically one of us was raped or will be raped. Not so “awkward” when it’s a family member, is it? 
Remember when I was a waitress? I had to walk home after my shift with my pepper spray in my hand, praying some drunk starfish wouldn’t stumble out of a bar and try to assault me. And even then, according to statistics, one of my friends is more likely to rape me than a stranger. That means Corey or Nate are more likely to hurt me than Random Joe I ran into walking home. 
Since being in college I have met amazing people. One girl was raped from the time she was 8 to the time she was 15… 
It was awful. She’s lucky she’s so well adjusted. She suffered something NO ONE should ever have to suffer. And she did not deserve it, no one does.
What I’m trying to say, is that rape isn’t funny, Cameron. It’s something you should NEVER hashtag. It’s not something you call awkward. It’s horrific. It’s cruel and awful. By writing that, you are advancing what is called “rape culture”. Every time you joke about rape, or use that hashtag, or say a girl dresses a certain way so she deserves harassment or say she was flirting so she wants it etc. etc., you are reaffirming the very misinformed idea that rape, and assault and harassment are ok. IT’S NOT. 
If I see you post anything else like that, or hear you say anything like that ever again, I will most likely burst into tears. I will do that, instead of beat the stuff out of you, because I know you are so much better. You are so much more than those jokes. They are not funny, and honestly, when you laugh at them, or make them, what you are saying is, 
“Ya sure, I have a sister, but since she wears really revealing clothes, if she gets raped, she deserves it. She totally flirted with that guy, so he totally had the right to grab her, she led him on!” 
I hope you honestly don’t think that. 
In conclusion, cause I’m sure you stopped paying attention a long time ago, I’m going to ask how long it took you to get to the bottom of this message. A minute? Maybe a minute and a half if you had to pause to groan about how I’m such a raging bitch? 
Here’s another tidbit for you. In the time it took you to read this whole thing, two women where assaulted. Two women who are probably someones sisters. Someones mothers. Someones friends. 
Think about it, and don’t use that hashtag again.
