Author Topic: a school in my town decided to do an unannounced intruder drill  (Read 971 times)

It's a tricky situation. You want the drills for legitimate reasons. They're good to do.
But it's a scary thing to do to children and parents, giving them no warning.

If you warn them though, they get lax and people don't take it seriously enough.
It's the same reason why most schools don't tend to tell students, or even all staff, of fire drills.

You could always teach the students not to text parents in this situation, but that's probably not what you want should the situation be real. And if the drills are to be effective then you never should be able to tell if it is a drill or not until it's over.

It's a weird situation. I don’t really know what to think about it.

I've never had a drill. We've had a lab emergency evacuation once or twice this past month.

some temporary worrying is more than worth being prepared

ive had a real intruder drill once
i got to hide in the closet in the band room and got to sit with a drum kit :D

Today, a fire alarm went off in my school.
Someone burning their bacon set it off.

At one of my old schools the fire alarm used to go off reasonably regularly because of a toaster in the staff room consistently burning toast.

My school only ever has fire drills and they usually don't even tell the teachers

My elementary school, however, had the worst lockdown procedure. The entire class all huddled together in the corner. I told my teacher the flaws of that strategy but she just it wasn't her decision.

Our school has short-distance evacuation drills (just like a fire drill, but farther from the school), long-distance evacuation drills (we go to the highschool), they probably do have a drill for "pile into the loving buses, both schools are in trouble", but we do not do them, they also have fire drills, and lockdown drills.

None of the kids take these seriously, which is scary.

Also I just recently realized that the best way to do a school shooting is to pull the fire alarms and shoot all the kids when they walk out. :o

That's the point.
