I saw this in a TV show and I was incredibly dumbfounded at it. I guess it actually does work, well then.

No they aren't. Moving a speaker generates an electrical current travelling in the opposite direction of input sound. Most modern headphones are designed to block electric current moving that direction, but on most older headphones you can plug them into your mic jack and talk into them.
I didn't try the latter but I can confirm that plugging a mic in the audio-out will reproduce sounds.
