Author Topic: I can't find a budget build anywhere  (Read 649 times)

I mean, all I can find are stuffty 300 dollar "gaming pcs". I need recommendations. I can build computers, so that's not an issue. Games I want to be able to play:

  • Left 4 Dead 2 (Preferably max settings)
  • Team Fortress 2 (Max settings)
  • CS:GO (Max of course)
  • DayZ (Can tolerate lower settings; just needs to function good)

Thanks.

Build a system off of the AMD Llano (old), Trinity, Richland, or Kaveri family of APUs if you want budget gaming performance. You won't have much fun trying to emulate a Gamecube game on the CPU but the GPUs in them are RIDICULOUSLY competent for the amount of power they draw and the heat they kick off. Even my A6-based laptop handled every game you mentioned on max with ease; an A10 desktop processor will be a loving monster.

Case is obviously up to you, 8GB of RAM is plenty, storage is up to you, and obviously you need an FM2 socketed motherboard

again they're not exactly beefy CPUs but they overclock well and the GPUs are loving ridiculous, they're great for budget gaming

I'm not too familiar with APU's. I don't understand how they can "run BF4" if they can't handle GameCube games.

actually, seeing some gameplays and such, it's not half bad. but with most of the videos I see, they lag.

Keep in mind that they're also recording and possibly encoding on the fly, if it's recorded on an APU then that's putting a significant strain on it as an APU handles everything that a separate CPU and GPU would except it's doing it by itself.

Save your money and buy a decent computer.

gamecube games aren't optimized for pc hardware.

My PC can't even correctly render the heat effects inside Dragonroost or whatever it's called in Wind Waker, curse consoles and their exclusive effects chips.

L4D2, TF2 and CS:GO can run on toasters, that wouldn't be an issue.
Then there's DayZ which requires a $3000 desktop to run on 60 fps stable on low. (Overly exagerating, but nonetheless:)
You're going to have a bad time since DayZ (The Arma 2 engine in particular) is poorly optimized.

they're not using the arma 2 engine for dayz though

it's the arma 3 one which is slightly better

My gaming computer is about 500$-600$

Get one of the new 28nm Kaveri APU's; they're expensive but have good graphics. Much more die area is devoted to the GPU that other APU's have (I think about 43% GPU). An AMD A10-7700K is a create choice although it's a little expensive ($160), but it has a Radeon R7 240 GPU, which will handle all the games you mentioned very well.
