Author Topic: what do you guys hate about your school firewall  (Read 3297 times)

My HS blocked a lot of ad servers so you'd see a lot of ads on sites replaced with the full-size blocked page sized down with scrollbars to the tiny ad size.

Kind of related, my school offered wood shop classes, in the higher level classes you could make anything you wanted for your project. I don't remember what I wanted to make, but the teacher didn't have any plans or anything for it in his books, so me and some other students went down to the library to look online. The entire time we were there, the librarian would not stop bitching at us because she didn't think our purposes were school related, no many how many times we told her our teacher sent us here to find information for our project

thats illegal
its still really easy to reset and i changed it to "password" so its an easy guess
also there is nothing you can use it for apart from full cmd privileges on that computer. you cant access network accounts or network administrators or remote shutdown and all that nasty stuff

so illegal really isnt the word to describe it
might be 'illegal' on their own terms of use but i doubt people go to jail for it

i hate it that they blocked Chia anime and Kiss anime. i liked to watch it during core/choice and during lunch. but they blocked them all about a month ago.

It blocks any page with "offensive" or "researchographic" text

My school's system works so that if it detects any site with possibly inappropriate words, it just blocks the site. No wonder 'steamcommunity' was blocked for 'society' which I think is stupid as stuff.

I met the guys who deal with all this though. They actually have this code you can put in the start menu to bypass anything, on any account. It's like a proxy without the illegalness.

I just tunnel all my traffic through my privately owned server. It's the easiest solution to my school's extremely heavy filters.

Like seriously, they blocked the scripts that are used for common web proxies, effectively breaking all of them

i don't believe much of forgetin anything is blocked at my school
fun fact: i'm an approx. A student in everything that requires a computer. contary to popular belief, you can do your required work /and/ goof off playing Candy Blast Mania. think before you post
I went to a high school where the only thing you needed a computer for was to type essays and make presentations. Your sources could come from the internet or a book. Except we had to use our own computers at home or use the lab library computers. In college is the same thing, research and type reports. As far as notes go, I just write them down on paper in a note book.

If you complete your work with no other work to complete then you should probably give up your seat. That seat can be used by someone who needs to do school work, not play cookie clicker or candy crush, Farmville, check imgur, reddit, ect.

Now if the school computer lab isn't always available, use a computer at a library if one is available. It might be slow, old, and time consuming. Also before you can come up with more reasons, I have heard the I'm busy all the time excuse many times. Other than school related things, what else is keeping you busy? Video games, facebook, ect? If you are in highschool, you more focus should be your education, sports are trivial, actual work and employment should be for those who can balance work with school. If you can't balance how you manage your time, then you probably shouldn't be biting off more than you can chew.

The fact that it really didn't block anything except the things we needed.

School firewall here blocks just about everything.

Good thing I've got my own proxy. http://prx.pecon.us
shows up as malicious on my school firewall

My school has a Baracuda web filter, and mind you, it does the job pretty well, which is annoying as forget:
1) Blocks most proxies.
2) Blocks Blockland and anything referencing to a game.
3) Order to facing death to whoever thought it was a good idea (which it is) to use this.

I recently installed SSL on it, that should probably fix it.

it doesn't let me browse forums

My school recently blocked Steam download servers as well as reddit. So I set up a VPN at home so I could download steam games. (free VPNs have stuffty speeds) Unfortunately my upload speed is like 5 so it's not much of an improvement.
