Author Topic: Building a cheap, low cost (<400$) gaming computer?  (Read 1277 times)

I'm thinking of building a low cost gaming computer to play video games with. Instead of getting a PS4 I'm just going to get a low-cost computer (guess it's called a console killer?) that I can play CS:GO and ARMA 3 at medium settings with a FPS that is consistently above 60.

Here's what I've thought about getting so far.

Video Card:
GeForce GT 630 2GB VRAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130821

I heard AMD graphics cards are cheaper but I've also heard nVidia is more reliable and has more support.

CPU:
AMD Athlon X4 3.4 GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113328

It's cheap, and 3.4 GHz is already overkill for my purposes.

Hard Drive:
I don't know this because Western Digital and Seagate both look like stuffty brands.

Motherboard:
Again I've tried looking but my knowledge is limited at best but the only thing I need is a micro ATX board that can fit in the case below.

RAM:
My father works with computers and we have like 3 surplus dinosaurs downstairs so I can probably caanibalise off of that.

Case:
Rosewell Micro-ATX Case

Cheap as stuff. I don't even need a case, I could probably throw all of the parts into a pizza box if I wanted to, but obviously I don't want my stuff getting dusty or worse.

Power Supply:
Again, something I know nothing about.

All of the parts should be and are in the 50-80 dollar range. I'd like it if it stayed in that range.Right now the total cost is around 185.

Suggestions, tips? Anyways thank you in advance.

-whoops sorry wrong button.-

Wait what? Which parts exactly do you already own?

Ignore fab, AMD is better for the cost at low prices.

Edit: Usually. It depends on your needs. Again, let me know what you already have. I'll put together a list.

I don't own anything except for some garbage RAM. That was bad language on my part.

And a monitor, obviously. And a Mac mini with two 500GB hard drives.

I need a new computer because my Mac Mini, while it does have like 8GB of RAM, has a woefully underpowered Nvidia320M with 256MB VRAM and is unupgradeable.

Oh, so you're making a brand new rig? Alright, I'll put together a parts list. A couple questions, though.

Do you need a new monitor/keyboard/mouse or do you already have those?

Is this a build for purely web browsing? Do you plan on gaming too? Anything else?

Do you prefer faster computer startup times or better graphics quality in games?

Wat. The mac mini has a laptop GPU? That's awful. Anyways, you might be able to salvage the hard drives from the mac mini, assuming you're fine with not using the mac mini ever again.

Could you please try to find me either the model number or an amazon/newegg link to the specific mac mini you bought? I want to see what type of HDD it uses.

The title says that he wants a computer greater than $400. Therefore:

I already have all of the peripherals. Monitor, mouse, keyboard, headphones, the whole shebang

I plan on using it for light work (typing up school projects) but mainly playing games. My MacMini is running CSGO at minimum (and I mean minimum, I used console setting to get it as low as it can go) and it still dips below 20 FPS at high-intensity moments.

I prefer graphics quality but all I need is a good FPS for a modern game like ARMA 3 or BF3/4. By good I mean 60 or above on medium settings.

Here's the Mac specs.
