Yeah but then again, why should they care about this? If i ever get told I got a day off, I just take it.
Of course, I'm not saying that history isn't important, but in many cases it's not really necessary to know these things and I don't really blame these people for not knowing.

I thought America was all about Patriotism and love for America? Surely you need to know at least a little bit about your country first?
Including it's biggest wars and leaders?
There is zero excuse for not knowing who fought who in World War 2, or who the first President of the USA was.
You don't have to know the name of every battle and the leaders and outcomes, but you should at least know who your country fought and who won.
And these things aren't irrelevant. They are directly responsible for modern foreign relations, and national/international laws.
Though, I think the question of "what was the civil war about" is sort of a loaded question since most people would just say 'slavery' which wasn't the only reason it happened.
The civil war one was a bit loaded in that sense, but at the same time, they were accepting pretty broad answers.
Slavery is the most prominent reason for the war, so most people should really be able to name that.
