Author Topic: I'm getting a bass.  (Read 1503 times)

Yes, as the title implies, I am getting my very own bass guitar (my first non-school related instrument). Ok, well, it's sort of related to school. I've got three options for my high school, and I'm going to go into band instead of the others (visual and performing arts).

Does anyone here play bass and if so do you have any pointers? I've never seriously played a string instrument before.

I own a bass but I don't know how to play. Though, I know it's easier than guitar.

Good choice in instrument. Nobody plays bass. You'll be able to play a lot with your friends if they all have their reg instruments. (Piano drums guitar voice ect.)

This is a plus, also, I just like the sound of the bass.

I've never been in a band and the ones I have seen always have the bass guitarist at front (talking about school bands), which worries me, but nobody's concentrating on me, they're concentrating on the bass.

Being in the front shouldn't be a problem, they probably won't even look at you because the bass is a boring instrument to watch.
GL.

Hello! Bassist here, 7+ years. Ibanez Soundgear SR300FM

Bass is the most fun you'll have with guitar. It's simple to get into, and once you get the hang of it the sky's the limit. I started out with bass when I was in 6th grade, and have been playing since now (I'm 20). It helped me get into a regular guitar, but I love my bass more than any other stringed instrument.

Easiest way to get into it? YouTube some tutorials on proper technique with plucking and fretting, get your posture right (or else carpel tunnel!) and then learn your favorite song. Err, learn a song you know - don't try to start out with Fly By Night or Teen Town or something...

Get used to scales too. Scales are important, once you know where things are on the neck naturally you start to learn way quicker and play way better. Then you can start to improv which is super fun.

All of your advice has been heeded. If you are interested in the guitar I'm buying, it's a Fender Jaguar.

Drop the bass.

OT: I have a guitar, but I only play some tunes.
