he is probably using his 'friend' as some sort of excuse.

It's way more handicapped than that.  He's sent me a bunch of emails.  He claims that his "friend" sent him a link and told him to spam it everywhere, so he did.  Then later his "friend" gave him a bunch of the keys he had stolen and he used them.  But he swears he didn't know what the link was and that he never looked at it, he just blindly did what his "friend" told him to do.

It's the most convoluted bullstuff lie.
