Author Topic: 3DS Max Brick Alignment + Blender Import  (Read 25693 times)

I am trying to replicate a 1x4x5 brick in 3DS Max to figure out how brick alignment works. I made a cube that is a 1x4x6 in Max and scaled it by 0.025 when I exported (Max units are massive in BL).

Here's what the model looks like in Max (grid lines at every 0.25 unit)

This was the result after exporting as an obj and converting to a blb using Baddy's converter:

Notice that there's a gap on the bottom and on each side.

Also, I strangely had to offset the model to make it align better in BL, but I have no clue why that was. Without raising the model up by .25, it sunk into the floor by about the height of a plate. I also tried importing the model into Blender and then exporting as an OBJ, but no brick appeared when I did this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Solution:
Use generic units instead of meters in 3DS Max! Using generic units, a 1x1x1 brick would be 1x1x1.2 units in Max.
(To change the units, go to Customize > Units Setup)

I use 3DS Max myself and I have never been able to figure this out.

I've just been using the dimensions stated above and the bricks have been turning out decently. Sure, they aren't perfectly aligned, but they still work as bricks.

Also, bricks should be centered on the origin. The reason I was having alignment issues was because of the size of the brick not matching up with BL units.

Perhaps you can make the brick in 3DS Max, import it into Blender, and then align and export? I doubt you could find very much help on a several-hundred dollar program in this community.

I did try that, but when I exported the brick into Blockland it was completely invisible, so I'm not sure what was going on.

Then you're doing it wrong. Without details I can't help you. http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=230303.0

Follow that, and just use the model you imported from 3DS Max, or just use Blender instead :P

It's fine thanks, I've just been using my 3DS Max approximation and things have gone smoothly. It's best not for me to use other programs because I really only know Max well.

-snip-

I misread the issue

I have also been having problems importing to Blender. I saved my spider model as a .3DS, then imported the file into Blender.

In Max:

Can anyone help me figure out how to properly export this as a DTS?

Try exporting as OBJ instead.

Try exporting as OBJ instead.
Will do when I wake up. I thought 3DS was a more standard format?

Not really, it's about as standard as .blend. It's used as the primary format for one application and all the others just add support because they can. Dae and obj are much more common, at least in my experience.

Alright well I used OBJ and it imported correctly, just the rotation was 90 degrees off so the entire model was facing down. Might try different export settings in Max. Thanks for the help!

Uhhh, 3DS Max units are not huge. The home grid is defaulted to 10.
To change this go to:

Here, click it, and this window pops up. Change the grid spacing to 1.

Note: length and width are both 1 Max unit but each BL plate is 0.4 in height so a 1x1x1 brick is 1x1x1.2 in Max

I recreated the 1x4x5 brick in max with these settings:

And I made sure the brick was centered and at 0 height

Perfect!

EDIT: I also hope you aren't using METERS to try to make bricks with.
