Author Topic: [VIDEO] 1800 Players Online in Blockland Trailer  (Read 5110 times)

This is the biggest ammount of players online we've ever got, why can't I make a video about this?

why would you? videos are for entertainment, not precisely celebration. if you wanted to celebrate this fact with your fellow community members, make a thread or post in one or something.

Videos are not limited only for entertainment, hell we can celebrate that with many ways possible than just a topic, and I wanted to make a video so this day will be remembered for a while

a video is a very strange, and distant way to celebrate something with people. a post on a forum is a much more social activity, compared to a video - which has to have a point, conflict, structure and a whole whimsy of other things to work. you're missing the point entirely of editing and making videos if you don't know the why and can concretely justify it.

a video is a very strange

because making a video for celebrating is uncommon? what the forget..?
it's like saying "wow don't record that moment where you're having fun, just talk about it"

what do you think recording is made for?

this isn't just a recording and there is no reaction - no human element. this isn't a recording, this is a video which he meticulously edited and put at least some planning into, with the shots and sets and etc.

Wait you just said he made videos on a whim yet you said he planned this out
I agree videos aren't just for entertainment. People celebrate in them too. Doesn't require a human element in my opinion

mostly. "here's an idea" or "I want to do this". like minecraft development. they have to make the thing and put it together, but they think about the final product as they're making it.

communicating inter personally by edited video when you've got better mediums is... I'll leave you to what you think. please do me a service and at least try to see what I mean. I know filipe's got this "following" but it pays to be critical everywhere you can.

I'm still not seeing the point of this video.

I'm not seeing the point of this post. We could play this game with anything. What is the point of posting on this forum? What is the point in building anything? What is the point of having gallery? What is the point of playing Blockland, video games, or existing?

The point is: content. A creation made with Blockland. Showcasing builds, gameplay, concepts, fun are all things that are shown in this gallery. It will not change your life, it will not really have a point. It's just some cool stuff for us to consume and the produce to improve. You're right, the video did not have a narrative element, no plotline or robot dinosaurs, it was simply a 'blockland creation' and he was showing it off. Read the description of this board.
There are a number of things you could say in criticism of this video. "there was no point in making this" is not valid. Hell, it's not even correct. It's a hobby that Filipe enjoys engaging in. Time spent having fun is not time spent wasted.

No I see where you're coming from
I just don't agree with you lol sorry

This is an amazing representation of all the great, weird, fun, or beautiful stuff that can happen with over 112k people playing this game.

Also, my ID still doesn't feel low.

not my point at all. i don't care that it isn't profound, just that it's misplaced. having fun with something is one thing, publishing it is another. i don't care what you do for fun or what point there is in doing it. i suppose i should top everything i say off with "i feel like, as a viewer, this video has no value". it's me. forget, you people, stuff, I'm out

There are several benefits to publishing your work to a relevant community. Filipe may receive constructive criticism on his cinematography / narrative skills / general multimedia skills, and consumers may be entertained by it. I, personally, was somewhat inspired to play Blockland again and host a server. There is absolutely no reason to not publish finished worked to a relevant community.

If you are personally not entertained by this video, then don't post in the thread man, don't discourage the producer from creating more content that other people could potentially benefit from.

EDIT:

Not to mention, humans respond more actively and attentively to Audio/Visual media than just text. So yes, by making this video, Filipe essentially delivers the prominence of the recent player-base spike in a format that people will be more attentive to, and by this logic, this video actually does have a very active purpose.

i'm referring to the minecraft thing. think about the end product and how your community will react. i feel like these videos don't have a plan, which is a fundamental aspect of any structured media (games, videos, short films, stories). this is just what I've learned from what I've been taught about project development. making something to put out to the public needs thorough planning, a lot of which is about what the viewer wants and how to appeal to them (or the client). I suppose by that standard filipe's vids are great because everyone eats them up

Actually, looking at the use of SWAT codes and conventions, I'd say that this video would've more than likely had some level of pre-production planning. I don't think Filipe would've spent time going from server to server recording gameplay footage, and editing it, and publishing it, without having a single thought about what the reaction to the community would be.

I don't even like Filipe as a person, so believe me when I say I'm taking a very objective viewpoint here, but as someone who aspires to produce content myself, I would much rather uphold the idea of an openly accepting community of content and contribution. We have too many people fighting in Drama, and not enough people building in Gallery. Contribution builds a community, and if you try and hamfist some level of quality standard into the mix, people are going to be scared and not release their content. This is regressive behavior that damages gaming communities.
