i preordered flying lotus's "you're dead!"
let us be friends

So at a thrift store yesterday I got some bing crosby christmas 78s from the 40s (god rest ye merry gentlemen/faith of our fathers, silent night/o come all ye faithful), a frank sinatra 78 (white christmas), and a non christmas bing crosby 78 (stardust). Also Crocodile Rock, The Alvin and The Chipmunks song, Heartaches by the number, and a bunch of others on 45s, as well as a bunch of albums (no famous ones though).

So it turns out that the 50s record player is more hassle than it's worth, but at goodwill I found a late 50s webcor (imperial holiday I think) radio/phonograph, and my brothers friends dad looked it over and is gonna fix it up for me (it's his hobby and it doesnt need much, just a new wire and a new needle I think).

Notable and good stores:
Vinyl Dreams
Halcyon The Shop
Forced Exposure

Add these to the list of stores pls. They're all online.

I've been trying to go to my local record store for nearly 2 months, but my parents being busy combined with me being busy and the store itself being a 30 minute drive each way complicates things.

you should try buying online. it's much more convenient plus you don't have to go anywhere. record stores are much quicker, but still, buying online is superior in some ways. want me to hook you up with some good sellers on discogs?

I've bought online before, but waiting a week for delivery sucks, and also, depending on who you buy it from, it'll probably get a bit warped a bit during delivery.

My opinion? Vinyls are obsolete. That warm sound can be easily reproduced and that square wave stuff is pretty much BS. Look at any mp3 in audacity and it's extremely obvious that it uses sine waves, like all audio. In fact, square waves aren't even possible as you'd need an infinite sample rate.

I don't care about the quality of sound when I play a record. A lot of the music I like is not on YouTube/sounds stuff where it is uploaded, so I use vinyl more as an alternative to the computer.

I can see where that would be true, although what kind of music has never been digitized ever?

I don't have the means of listening to or funds to buy vinyl from bands, but I'm going to start trying to buy CD's from bands when possible. I love the sense of ownership of the music, especially albums I love.

Go on http://discogs.com and search through a lot of the records/cds/cassettes there, try to google them. You'll see that a ton of them you cannot find a listen anywhere.

Yeah, I've been looking at Discogs, but I worry about shipping and the records breaking in transit.

don't worry. most shippers know this and pack their stuff VERY well.

holy stuff test pressings. i do like chicago house (particularly daft punk's homework) and i kinda live there but yeaaah.

i do want some boards of canada on vinyl if that counts as experimental.
