I catch news of the defeat through autocat retransmissions. It hits me hard. The Huits have take the port, and allegedly Captain Steele and 2nd LT Daxton have been captured. I can't help but feel guilty, as I got out with a for-the-most-part functioning aircraft.

"Mjolinr 1-2 cleared to land Runway 9, taxi via route alpha, hold short at bravo,"

I eventually get to the hanger. The roosterpit is open, the parking spaces to my flanks, empty. My concscience, guilty.

2 more spaces over, Obrads plane sits. It is banged up, as some shots are seen on the aircraft. He slowly walks out, sweating. He wipes his forehead, walking straight to the briefing room. He opens the door.
"When are we going on the rescue mission."

After another moment of daydream, I'm hit with a stark reality, I'm the commander's wingman, wouldn't that put me in first line for commander? I can only wonder if in cut out to be.

Steele mentally slaps Rory

Blame Miller, he never even fired a shot.

I sit on my bed, alone in the barracks. The news just broke a few hours ago.

After two hours or so after the retreat was declared it was announced at the briefing room who was missing. It was a hard blow for all of us- this was barely our third or fourth mission and we had already lost a CO and a pilot. It was quick and to the point- no time for questions or comments, they told us and dismissed us, just like that.

If they were dead, shot in the back of the head or executed, well, nothing to bury and nothing to see. If we ever retake the port we might find the bodies.

If they were still alive it was inevitable that we would send somebody to rescue them. Probably some special forces team, though success will not assured- the battle showed us that the Huits are not to be underestimated. Hopefully it succeeds, if they ever send someone to get them.

I head back to the barracks after I finish painting my Hornet. "Hey Simon, I'm going to help the guys with getting one of the Ospreys up and running again." I look back out of the doorway as I lean against the frame. "Logistics needed another aircraft, and I guess one of their C-130s got shot down." I leave promptly, closing the door behind me.

I walk into the barracks where Victor and Simon are.
After hearing the news, Tom is struck with a strange feeling that they might not come back. But knowing us, they probably will. I follow Victor out of the door.

I send an inquiry to the logistics department to see if they have any unused F-20 Tigersharks that are in storage, before heading to the hangar where the Osprey was being repaired.

The room is empty, the debrief already having taken place. Regardless, it doesn't seem you'll be going on a rescue mission any time soon.

A response is sent to the requisitions computer in your locker, indicating that there are. On the off-chance that you manage to get shot down again, a Mirage 2000 or F-20 Tigershark will be waiting.

There's like three people MIA you're probably gonna get a spot in the rescue mission.

hooray

I get to work on one of the Osprey's engine, while the mechanics are working on other components of the aircraft. I mark down a few items on checklist attached to a clipboard as I go through the engine. So far, the Osprey only needs to be hosed down, oiled up, and fueled. I close up the access panel and walk inside of the Osprey's cargo bay.

On the off-chance that you manage to get shot down again,

I haven't been shot down yet, I'm just checking in. I didn't even go on the latest mission.
