is it bad that my favorite windows logo is the one for 3.1

also, any idea when the age of bland and boring logos will end
when tablet pc's die out

How the forget do I cygwin.

Whenever I try the setup thing, it always fails on a download then completely stops.
Then I have to restart the whole thing and it happens again. I tried a ton of mirrors too.

im thinking about changing my windows 8 to have an actual start menu but keep the apps and the windows 8 feel, is there a free way to do this

okay it looks like i might be able to do some things with this classic shell program, so far i have an improved start button and the start menu admitting the start screen exists and stuff

Use classic shell, the search seems to run faster than windows start search too.

you posted a few seconds later than my edit so i dont blame ya for being late, but yeah i am using this and it seems to work nicely, i might make my own skin for it though once i figure out how

Nice, I should do that with my PC.

I have Windows 7 on the family laptop. I am supposed to be getting Windows 8.1 soon. A friend of my father's said he can give it to me but it has been a while

Several months back, I upgraded to 8.1 from Vista. I don't regret it. Once you find your way around the goofy bits, it's just a great Windows version.

The touchscreen stuff isn't forced on you at all, really. In more recent updates, they've made the Start mode stuff integrate a lot better with Desktop mode as well. (they actually can be handled like real windows wo)

Performance-wise, it's worked great; compatibility-wise, no problems; looks-wise, it's p ok; I'm satisfied.

also MOUNTING .ISO FILES COMES WITH WINDOWS NOW WOW that's so small but i love it

You're making me think I should upgrade to 8.1 instead of 7

do people even use vista anymore

I know it's still supported but it's pretty much the modern-day Windows Mistake Edition

I can bet if someone made a windows vista addon it would be fail binned.

If you like Windows XP, you're best off upgrading to 7. Windows 7 is basically what would happen if you took Windows XP and made it twice as good.

Why wouldn't you? The only legitimate complaint about 8 I've heard is the touchscreen stuff; 8.1 improves on that a ton, and it seems like they intend to improve it even more in the future.

I spend most of my time in Desktop mode anyway. The only time I ever access the start menu is when I need to find a program. I'm pretty sure general performance is improved compared to past Windows versions; it's newer, so support will last longer; I don't think there's much a reason to upgrade to an older version of Windows right now.

I guess it comes down to preference, but I would definitely say you're missing out if you choose to avoid Windows 8.
