Author Topic: Looking to get into gamedev  (Read 1818 times)

coding is the easy part mate
i disagree. having to learn all those frameworks and libraries and putting hours on hours into creating the function of the game is daunting.

i would say learn a simpler language than C++ for learning how to program, then migrate to C++.

Sheesh everyone  wants to be a game developer these  days.
You know how I sometimes make my own games?
Yeah, I took criminal justice as my major.

I wish I could find the time and patience to start coding. Well I don't even know where to start :(

codecademy is a good start. just blast through the javascript sequence, it takes less than a day i think. problem is javascript doesn't have a dedicated interpreter, so you would either have to put your javascript on a webpage or use an online interpreter like this

javascript isn't strongly typed so it might be a bad recommendation, but i can't think of a more accessible language with a tutorial. C++/C is hard to compile on Windows, Python isn't strongly typed either, I don't know of any Java tutorials. What do you guys think is the best beginner language?

i learned the basics of HTML and Java, Java was kind of confusing. I liked HTML better.

i have 'people who dont realize that java and javascript arent the same thing' on my cringe list now

well then you're an starfish. i made this mistake myself. that doesn't mean they're stupid, that just means they don't have knowledge of different programming languages.

HTML isn't even a programming language, they're barely comparable.

i know this
like i realize these people don't know that but for me its common knowledge so i feel like for everyone else its common knowledge but then i see someone forget up and it hurts inside

This. Learn HTML, it's hand down the best programming language for game development. You just cant beat the speed, not even with assembly. It's extremely easy to learn and program in because of it's dynamic type system and it has a garbage collector so you wont need to worry much about memory management, where, if you learned a language like C/C++ you'd have to manually manage memory.

This is 2014 guys, not 1980, it's time we stop suggesting people write their games in obsolete and broken languages.

Yeah, wow! Those loving handicaps, forget them for not knowing the difference!

10/10 i laughed

when you're applying it to a game, coding is definitely the easy part (from a coder's standpoint)

granted that you already know how to code.

if you don't know how to code, you aren't making a game yet, you're learning how to code.

i dont think html would be the best choice for a game though
is C# as easy as html

HTML is not a programming language and that is a completely invalid comparison

Though C# is about as easy to learn the basics of as Java, there are a lot more features added into the syntax than Java has so it can take a bunch more time to get to be able to fully take advantage of the features of the language.

No just here, 95% of the people here are consistent gamers. Ask anyone on this forum what they want to do when they're older and most likely they will say
A. Coder
B. Something involving animations
C. Game Developer/All of the above
or D. manwhore
