that's screenfetch. it takes a picture of your desktop while also displaying your specs--it's in the terminal, not directly on the desktop.

the terminal on the bottom is the specs for his server.

I always guess they just like to feel superior so they put all this stuff on their desktop so they can be different

and it's not his desktop, that's i3, a tiling window manager. it makes it so windows don't overlap and get cluttered
