Germany tanks were overhyped, expensive, and over machined tanks. Their later tanks (namely the Panther) suffered from massive reliability problems and the workmanship on them was terrible, with sloppy and weak welds, terrible engines and suspensions, and tanks that did not work when they needed to. The only exception was the first Tiger tank which was actually pretty good.
The M4 Sherman (namely the A3 variants) had the same frontal armor thickness of a Tiger and were more reliable and were much easier to produce, even though they had a smaller gun. While the Panther was a problem for Sherman tank crews, the Sherman Firefly's gun was actually more powerful than the Panthers, and the sheer number of Sherman mitigated the Panther's advantages anyways.
