The Apple iPhone is actually a really quality product, I understand the stuff given to them for overpricing products (e.g. macs) but the iphone stands in the same price range as any other top android and competes fairly well.

i believe iphones are most notorious for having cracked screens
literally 2/3 of all the apple products i have seen other people using have a cracked screen
most people i see with some sort of android phone don't have a cracked screen
also, that phone looks like it was thrown onto the ground and run over with a car

Cases are a good idea in general. Every phone will shatter after being dropped at one point.

They were just being careless. There are way cheaper cases and didn't bother to buy them.

btw my last htc one shattered after two drops

my current iphone 5 has resisted over 10 drops and is still going with only a few scratches
both had cases
