no they're not
sennhiesers are trash
They are indeed. Sennheisers headphones are all severely overpriced plastic-tastic toys that sound overly warm and unrefined. This only stops being true at about the $1500 price point, the HD800, and even then a $200 headphone is really close to its performance.

Regarding the OP, its very difficult to get a good headphone for cheap with the headphone market in it's current condtion. Try a Superlux HD-668b or TEAC CT-H02. Absolutely do not get an ATH-M50, or those sennheisers; both are shrill, overpriced trash.

If you wouldn't be adverse to something used and several times older than you, there are a lot of vintage headphones on ebay for relatively cheap that offer performance well above the prices you see nowadays.

  • An Audio-Technica ATH-3, ATH-4, or ATH-5 would be a great gaming headphone and are all extremely comfortable. Goes for $30-80, a little rare, but there are a few of them up right now on ebay.
  • A Yamaha YH-1, HP-1, YH-2 or HP-2 would be much of the same, but better (though harder to drive). Goes for $80-120 in good shape. Relatively common. Bassiest of all the three here so you'd probably like it the most.
  • A KOSS PRO/4AAA, while very uncomfortable, sounds great and can go for very cheaply ($40-60 in good shape). If you can handle the stiff pads, high weight, and dated look, it's probably the best deal here.
  • A Pioneer Monitor 10 sounds the best of anything aforementioned, for all applications. It goes for about $100 in the good condition and is relatively common. Of all these, this is the only headphone I still use, and I've had a lot of experience so that says something about their sound. It is however quite huge and heavy.

There are hundreds of others, but I've personally had experience with these ones. Do a quick ebay search and see what you find.

I'd be careful about the fabric style on headphones like this one. I have used these budget headphones and it wore off over the course of a year. Call it due to how cheap the headphones are, I still doubt they're any different.

I actually don't care for my Sennheisers 333d. Maybe it's the lack of a sound card for them who knows maybe if I felt like getting one I wouldn't be complaining about them. But I digress I love bass and the wubs which currently the headset supplies isn't like the bass/subwoofer I had on my triton headset before it crapped out.

Yeah no, it only looks ratty because of the age, these headphones were very expensive in the '80s and will hold up fine today.

I did however forget to mention build, and they are the last on the list because the cups are known to break off with abuse. You should always be careful with headphones, but it's probably best I make a build quality list too:

1: Monitor 10
-
2: 4AAA
-
-
-
-
3: ATH-3/4/5
4: YH-1/2/HP-1/2

Both the 4AAA and M10 are loving tanks, but as a result they're heavier. I have literally ran over the 4AAA with my bike without damaging it, and the M10 is built even stronger than that. These ain't toys; you can beat the stuff out of them and they'll still keep on going (though you might want to be careful with the 42-year-old cables >___>).

The ATH-3/4/5 are more balanced between quality and weight, while the Yammies could've definitely used metal struts on the headband to make them sturdier. Both of them are newer and should be more resistant to cable problems. Both of them would probably break with abuse though, and I'd recommend that they be treated properly. Don't go cramming them into a backpack or tossing them onto your desk. Either wear them around your neck or set them on a flat, stable surface when they're not in use.

Oh, and, if you don't want to go with any of my suggestions, the Koss Pro/DJ200 is probably your best bet of the ones you posted.

Hope this helps.

sennhiesers are trash

sennhieser represent here.

i've been using a pair of their gaming headphones and they're the best headset i've owned ever.

yes they're like $300 bucks but the build quality is amazing, they sound great, very comfy cloth pads, and the microphone doesn't sound cheap either.

the mic sounds very similar to a blue snoball, not a cheap mic with sound leakage (it happens with me because open back which is awesome btw)

their site is very lacking to the 2014 standards of web design but don't bash them because their site "sucks." when sennheiser says "dj", they're actually trying to market it for djs. they're a serious company that does audio tech for venues and studios, not a stuffty company that just says they are dj headphones but in reality it's just a ploy for kids who think dj makes them better.

EDIT:

they're really not. are you sure you're not talking about beats? oh btw, the HD800 won't work on a mobile phone since it has a 1/4inch stereo jack and it requires a powered headphone jack to run it.

seriously you gotta look up these things and determine if they're really good or not. best case is to actually try out the product first and then choose to buy or not.

tl;dr: sennheiser is a VERY respectable company and not a stuffty beats rip-off.

ANYWAYS. this is for OP. $100 dollar for headphones? what i did was i bought IEMs because i like the portability, but if you do prefer headphones, go for the sennheisers. they're cheaper and lack some of the things that the higher end models have (open backs, cloth pads) but work for mobile purposes since you won't need a powered headphone jack.

audio technica does good things too, but the build quality is kinda poop. the last thing i tried headphone wise from them was very plasticky and i'm not a guy who likes cheap plastic on my head.

another company would be AKG. one of their best headphones are on sale right now for $69. http://www.amazon.com/AKG-240-Semi-Open-Studio-Headphones/dp/B0001ARCFA

i'd say that's a better deal and WAY better sound from the cheap-o sennheisers. with audio, when you do spend more you will see a difference in quality with cheap vs premium products. (compare the list prices not the actual prices for my little known fact there. yes you might be able to get really good headphones for cheaper and that's what i did with my IEMs)

other brands to look out for: sony (good but super cheap), shure (their se215 IEMs are awesome for the swapable cable, but that's a earbud like thing not headphone), klipsch (yet again, earbud but higher quality).

i've been looking into the whole world of audiophile products for a few years now and i think these are things that people starting out for GOOD headphones and not stuffty beats.

1: Sennheiser is not respectable at all, their headphones are all exorbitantly overpriced and are all poorly constructed (except the HD700/800), they may not be as overpriced as beats but they're still very bad about it

2: Holy stuff no, the K240 Studio is rancid, if you're going to get a K240, get a K240 lovetett, it absolutely wrecks the Studio (I've owned both)

The studio is very sloppy and messy, its a stuffty Harmon-Kardon-made loudness headphone masquerading under the AKG name

if you wanna go AKG, look into the K400, K500, K612, K701, Q701, and K712 (K1000 if you're willing to pay 3x the original MSRP)

It seems clear you have no idea what you are talking about. You can't support your arguments and you don't supply anything better. I may be new here and you may be respected or some stuff, but you're making a fool of your punk ass here. Supply something you think is better or get the forget out.

Well now I'm conflicted. Its not like I need anything top of the line, I just need something that sounds good for cheap. It seems like there is a general distaste for Sennheiser so I might as well cross them off my list. Ill just do more searching then, because I'm really not looking for "vintage" headphones.

my pair of pc 363d's

i've had literally no problem at all with the construction of this headset whatsoever. it's quality plastic and not the cheap plasticky stuff i've seen on some cheap audio technica headphones. like seriously, i can twist these things pretty violently and they don't snap or make stressmarks on the band. they're not overpriced, they're marketed as a premium product.

2: vintage. quarter inch jack. not good for mobile use, dude.

i'd just say this: don't go for the cheap ones.

yes there's cheaper models but they punch up the bass and some of those are indeed the plasticky products. i own a better product of theirs and it rocks.

i had some in-ear ones that lasted me two years until the driver and the body snapped off. glue didn't fix it so i went for shure IEMs instead.

I'm currently just using an old cheap pair of IEMs until I can get a new pair of headphones. The main issue I have with IEMs is that they tend to fall out of my ear and get uncomfortable after awhile.

Sadly, I know that with ~100 dollars I wont be able to get anything decent, and thats fine. I would just like something.

okay I will
Sennheiser is absolute garbage, people buy them because they think they'll get quality out of them. I didn't supply evidence previously because I didn't want to start an argument, but now I guess I have to. Hm, lets go through some of the amazon listings for the prices for these, shall we. OP wanted $100 for a pear of headphones this is the literal first result, whats the most popular, what they want you to buy in that price range
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-202-Professional-Headphones-Black/dp/B003LPTAYI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1405402835&sr=8-2&keywords=sennheiser

these are beats

the drop is massive, both are nearly similar too. thats why I compare these to beats
now, lets compare this to something else, such as my superlux that I listed before

sure, its higher but at least you can loving hear higher sounds compared to beats where it just shakes your ears
sennheiser basically rips you the forget off because of their brand name, like beats. Freq range on the 202's are 18Hz - 18kHz
You want to know what beats are? 20 - 20000 Hz hmmm

yeah and my monitoring headphones came with one of those jacks

ignore the gayming mouse or whatever, I'm going to buy an intellemouse later on.

if op is so confident in getting sennheisers, at least don't get cheap ones. If you want something for more look for some audio technicas. They're really nice and they have excellent quality.

tl;dr I hate sennheisers and I didn't want to start an entire argument out of it, I was going to provide proof in my first post but like I said before that would start an entire stuffstorm but I guess I have to now.
Don't even get me started on the leakage of them. If you want sennheisers, go right ahead. I'm not going to stop you but apparently I'm forced to prove my point to everyone
