Author Topic: How can I improve my building skills?  (Read 904 times)

Title.

I'm really terrible and every building I make looks like stuff.
Can someone help me?

dont copy other blocklanders. there are only like 2 styles going around the community that i ever see out there. its at a point where it can no longer be called "skilled"

google up lego "city" "castle" "ship" or whatever you like. and look at the custom builds people have done.  try out a wall type they use, or a window detail you like.

in the end its not about your skill, but you define your own building style.

What Bisjac said. Also, look up real-life areas for inspiration, but don't directly copy them either. Just try for the same mood and atmosphere.

Really, the only way to improve your building skills:

1. Look at other people's builds and see what styles they use
2. Experiment with your own custom styles, seeing which one works
3. Keep building, even if it sucks, just take a break and move on and build something new
4. Accept comments and recommendations from good builders/random people

And, in about 2-3 years, you'll be a fairly good builder. It's all about building more and more. On your first try, it'll suck, no doubt, but eventually it will look like a masterpiece.

something I recently noticed was that builds look vastly better when they:
  • stick to a single theme, color scheme, etc.
  • cover more of the screen when you look at them - at least for speedkart tracks, because they are so big that you have to build on a larger scale than usual to fill up the same amount of screen - you see the details from so far away that building on a normal scale, you would barely notice the details as you pass by them. The main details that you notice are those that are far away, so make them huge.

You can learn a lot from other peoples' styles of building without copying their style entirely

one thing i'm also having trouble with is finding a colorset/matching up colors and making them look right. I guess I'll just have to take in inspiration, thanks to you all.

I'm not the best builder, but I'm VERY great at design
But I think it comes naturally.       <-------A Message From Backara
