Author Topic: Why are people so up-in-arms about no development updates?  (Read 2814 times)

Honestly, i don't understand. It's a sandbox game, almost everything is made by players, what could badspot even do without changing the engine?

[insert 'there are 15 stupid threads' picture]

well.. some people will argue that the game is broken. ie various bugs, vehicle physics, etc. and they aren't really demanding more content in that context, just for badspot to fix stuff because they're tired of dealing with bugs. any person in that situation would probably push for an update to fix it.

Better modding support, such as the following features:
Per image coloring, which will save on datablocks and give each weapon a freely customizable 16.5m colors.
Same with particles. It's already possible with brick emitters, why not projectiles and explosions?
More audio functions, like stopping audio server-sided that was called on a GameConnection class.

Fixes:
Sound being extremely loud if it's coming from your player in first person.
Audio channels sometimes reversing while looking up and down.
Vehicle physics.
Player physics. (corner jumping)

And general improvements:
Projectile networking improvements to cause less updates, especially at higher velocities, instead of just capping it.
Proper steam dedicated server support.
Workshop.

Could add more if you just had a bit of imagination.

because people are big babies and dont realise how loving awesome the game is right now

All I wanted was some improve vehicle physics, but I talked to Badspot on his server and he said he planned on doing absolutely nothing to fix them. I'd also talked to him about being able to see more than 8 lights at a time, he said it wasn't going to happen. Then his server crashed, and he didn't come back. When questioned about his progress on developing the game in a stream, he noted that he no longer felt like developing the game.

So if you were ever planning on making a complex racing game mode that is dependent on collision physics, you're never getting it. If you were planning on making an atmospheric build that works on illuminating darkness with brick lights, tough luck. It's frustrating, and there's not much we can do but ask Badspot to fix these things, which he isn't going to do.

While I understand Badspot's side of the argument, I understand the other side as well, I personally have felt extremely limited by these two setbacks.

Honestly at this point, Badspot probably either needs to pass the baton to someone else, or hire more devs onto the team to actually fix the damn game. People who haven't been on this game since its prototype and aren't entirely bored with it.

I'll sympathize with Badspot here and sort of give him a pat on the back for sticking it out as far as he did; finishing a game is no small feat, nor is developing it for 10+ years. It's completely fair that he's bored of it. That doesn't change the fact that the game is still broken in some ways. He's hella burnt out, and feels as though there's no issue as long as he's making money off of the game.

Fixes:

Vehicle physics. This one is way overdue
Player physics. (corner jumping)Disagreed, there is many builds that require corner jumping, including a default gamemode

And general improvements:
Projectile networking improvements to cause less updates, especially at higher velocities, instead of just capping it.Agreed
Proper steam dedicated server support. This should of been done since the beginning
Workshop For the love of god no, please no, workshop is so buggy and terrible (see my port)

The whole reason workshop sucks/ I highly dislike it = you are restricted to what you can upload, stuffty subscription system that works only half the time, horrible navigation.

In gmod I end up having to restart up to 20 times before I am actually able to play.

Too late.

This game has too much potential to stop development. I've played since 2008 and I'm still not bored of it.

It's more often abused than used. And it's very unreliable if you're using it in builds and really looks bad. The same thing could be achieved with an add-on, easily, so even if it were fixed, people could still have it.

Since when? Each workshop has it's own rules and limitations.
stuffty subscription system that works only half the time
Works just fine for me.
horrible navigation.
Depends on how the devs set up their game's workshop. Blade Symphony's and Space Engineers' both have properly organized workshops.

Seems like a problem on your end, or a problem with gmod. I don't even have to restart Blade Symphony to use workshop content I downloaded while in a server, and that game is in early access.

I honestly agree with you considering Garry is a biased game dev, instead of fixing gmod he covers his stuff up with animations for the main menu and re-making the entire menu system.

Its horrible, even though nearly everyone told him that the main menu with animations uses lots of memory and is high is Processor Usage he kept the animations instead of making a functional menu, and the the addon system is horrible, specially navigation.

He's one of those people that don't update the look of the game because they dislike the flat modern interface design.

Ontopic: I think v22 is in the works, maybe it could be Reflections that work with shaders, or a linux version as BL Steam version is unplayable on steam if you use linux.

I don't think its possible to use your old key after you switched to steam.
