The Purpose of this thread:This thread's main goal is not to specifically aim towards a User, But for those who do not know the meaning and/or the punishment towards DDoS Attack. How this came up is many Dramas I've seen have came up with someone Threatening to DDoS.
What is DDoS?DDoS's simple definition can be stated here:
In computing, a denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users.
Although the means to carry out, the motives for, and targets of a DoS attack vary, it generally consists of efforts to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the Internet.
Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers.
As you can see, This is no Joke
Offence and IntentionHow a DDoS Attack Violates the Law
The relevant law is section 3 of the Act, entitled “unauthorised acts with intent to impair, or with recklessness as to impairing, operation of computer, etc.”, which was added by section 36 of the Police and Justice Act 2006.
The Offence
(1) A person is guilty of an offence if-
(a) he does any unauthorised act in relation to a computer;
(b) at the time when he does the act he knows that it is unauthorised; and
(c) either subsection (2) or subsection (3) below applies.
Essentially, this involves doing something with, to, or about a computer knowingly without authorisation – the latter part will be discussed below.
Intention
(2) This subsection applies if the person intends by doing the act-
(a) to impair the operation of any computer;
(b) to prevent or hinder access to any program or data held in any computer;
(c) to impair the operation of any such program or the reliability of any such data; or
(d) to enable any of the things mentioned in paragraphs (a) to (c) above to be done.
PenaltyThe penalties of this crime are not took lightly, As see below:
The maximum statutory penalty for conspiracy to cause intentional damage to a protected computer in violation is five years’ imprisonment, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000, plus restitution if appropriate.
The maximum statutory penalty for causing intentional damage to a protected computer and aiding and abetting in violation 2 is 10 years’ imprisonment, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000, plus restitution if appropriate.
So now you know the Meaning and Offences,
and remember, This ain't no joke.
