let's debate guns

(this was an innawoods topic but it's sort of descended into a gun debate so whatever)

What do you think about guns? Should they be legal or illegal?

Personally I think it's fine (but still stupid) to own a handgun or shotgun or something like that for self defense, but anything military grade or more powerful than that should be illegal.

I think it's stupid to own a gun because statistically people are 16x-22x more likely to kill themselves or a family member than an actual home intruder. I would never own a gun but I believe people should have the freedom to do so if they wish.

I personally think the country would be better if all guns were banned and couldn't be used. However this would never work in real life because it would create a black market, similar to drugs. Basically it would take guns from law abiding citizens and leave them with criminals. Banning things rarely works.

This does not address hunting. Obviously hunters need guns, this is about guns for self defense.

they should start off by increasing gun security near school zones, and not sell certain things (or not at all) to people with a history of aggravated assault, drug or alchahol problems, or major mental issues

I think "all guns should be legal" is a bit of an extreme obviously.
The poll options are all pretty stupid because they're so vague. And no putting "assault weapons" will only make it worse, since "Assault weapons" are an arbitrary class of weapons basically defined by the government as "weapons that look like they could be used by the military".
But yes, I support expanded second amendment rights.
I do support background checks and closing of private sale loopholes, but the guns which you should actually be able to acquire should be expanded.

Guns deter crime and crimes committed with assault weapons aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. Spree killing victims are also a very insignificant portion of murder victims.
