don't upgrade from XP to 8.1
xp is better
so is MS-DOS
Oh hey look another win7 circlejerk man.

Hes probably just bashing 8.1 because he can't afford it
Im not bashing
I just like older versions better because they are more simple
(Other than MS-Dos which requires spock to help you run it but old versions look good to me)

8.1 is as simple as 7 or xp

b-but no start menu so bad :'(
lol whats funny is that in the latest windows 8.1 you do have a start menu

its just you gotta right click on it to bring it up.

sure, its not as fancy as the others, but its considered a start menu

At this point I am used to the Windows 8 interface, but they should at least include the option to have a start menu.

What's your favorite Linux distro, OP?

I don't think this counts.

He never said he actually wanted to switch operating systems.

I don't think this counts.
actually, it kinda does.

You have search right there, the Shut Down menu, which if you hover over it gives you the option to shut down, restart or go to sleep (just like the actual start menu)

Search pretty much functions the same as before.

Run is there, which was also there in previous Windows start menus.

File Explorer, again, was still in start menus.

Control panel was there, but I don't know about Task Manager being there.

And then you have a bunch more features like 'Programs and Features', 'Mobility Center', and 'Power Options'

so start menu is there, just more advanced.

on my start menu i have command prompt

All thats changed is that now it's all grey, you don't have a search bar at the bottom but instead an option to search (which again, functions exactly the same) and no profile picture. I don't get what your problem is. if your problem  is "B-BUT THEY REMOVED "SHOW ALL!!!1!" use search

Oh god you are dumb lol
do you understand the concept of sarcasm

snop
There's no list of installed programs there.

And that menu is not more advanced. It's smaller, more limited, and clearly not as good as the Windows 7 start menu. An operating system's applications menu should not be a step down from it's previous one.

whats so funny. you cant run that program because its made for windows xp. many programs made for xp dont work on newer windows versions.

There's no list of installed programs there.
what do you mean

Remember this? It listed all of your applications at once in one big list.

There's none of that in Windows 8.1. You have to stop what you're doing and enter the full screen start menu and search for what you wanted in the bar at the top.

8 makes sense for a tablet in my mind, but I see no reason to change the way we use regular computers, other than maybe to create a uniform system, and then it still makes more sense to me to maintain the old way.  For people like me who don't thrive on change 8 is a nightmare.
