Author Topic: Perma-bans: a bit much aren't they?  (Read 2958 times)

I do not see why perma-bans are something that is ever truly necessary. I can not image a scenario where you would need to ban somebody longer than a year at the most. I mean, if they do something that bad, they will probably not be the same person a year later, and if they are and you still even play/host a server, you could just ban them for another year, assuming they still play as well and still feel it necessary to screw with your server. What are your thoughts on this?

How is this against the rules?

Most people who ban permanently remove the ban after some time anyway.

If you're absolutely certain you don't want someone on your server, you don't have to deal with them. At the same time, being a jerkhole isn't OK, so you should always be reasonable, but permabans are definitely a legitimate punishment for more serious problem users.

This.

When it comes to hackers, exploiters, or just a serious douchebag, a permanent ban is always an acceptable choice.

i dont do anything BUT perm bans.
if you forget around on my server, i want you gone forever. i dont see what the big deal is.

its not my job to give you a second chance to learn a lesson. that stuff is your parents job.

Yes but, if they still play a whole year later, they might have learned better by then. I think a year is long enough to let somebody back on, as they have likely changes as a person over that whole year.

I can not imagine a senario where somebody could do something so horrible through a game, that there is a low enough chance they will ever change, and even if there is, and they still play all that time later and come back. Is it really that hard to ban them again, a whole long year later?

Nobody said this was a big deal, just discussing it is all. I personally feel like perma-bans are always overkill. If somebody is that much of an issue, it is not that hard to ban them again a year later, assuming they still play and assuming they still are just as bad as before.

if you are desperate for a player count then sure. give everyone a million chances.
but for every 1 idiot i ban, there arw 50 normal players thatwill visit.
and i ban like 10 people a day when i hoat. my ban liat ia 6 years old. itsgot over 4000 people on it. and all perm bans.

clean your banlist and remove inactive players

It truly comes down to the preference of the server host, but nine times out of ten if a host thinks a person can change, then a perma ban can be revoked.

Like my previous examples, hackers and exploiters, people like that dont deserve a chance to come back regardless of if they change or not because doing this behavior willingly in the first place is unacceptable.

How overkill they are depends on the situation. Say for example you permaban a guy that calls you a "friend", that's a bit overkill, in my opinion, but it's always under the hosts discretion. A more fitting example would be a guy you ban permanently for continuously abusing ingame mechanics to gain an advantage despite several warnings. That would definately warrant a permanent ban in my server, and if they chose to ignore warnings, I dont ever want them back, whether or not they change is irrelevant.
