Author Topic: My landlord doesn't want me to buy wifi?  (Read 2390 times)

Moving into my house on sunday, and my landlord said I'm not allowed to have my own wifi as there's already an ethernet cable in the house which provides to the whole house estate.
But why would they tell my housemate that we CANT buy wifi?
obviously we have gone ahead and bought our own wifi, but wtf.

pls someone explain.

wifi = no but ethernet = yes?

I think it might be so they can save electricity??
Apparently the dude next door to use got busted for using research lol wtf is this stuff christian camp

I can't remember if you explained to me or not, but how come you aren't just staying in Halls like a normal first-year student?
It's slightly more expensive (but the fee should be covered by your student loan), but electricity, gas, water, internet and heating are all included in the cost of rent.

Oh, right. Sorry. Sucks to be you.
I just got my halls comfirmation the other day.

Anyway, by wifi, what does he even me? You're not allowed to buy a router and plug it in to the ethernet cable? Because unless I'm missing a step in how home networks work, that's it, right?

That's it, pretty much.

I mean, it depends on what OP and the landlord are referring to.

Wifi could mean either a wifi router or a wireless internet router (from satellite, like 4g or some stuff)

If it's the latter, I'd understand because the landlord's probably a perv who likes to monitor people's activity which is probably how that one guy got "busted."

If it's the former i don't forgetin know duude

Just hide SSID if it becomes a problem.

But I mean... It's just WiFi.

how old is your landlord

And by providing an ethernet cable to the house, does he mean he provides just one, or one to each room?
I mean, you are students. It's pretty understandable that you're going to have more than 1 gadget that connects to the internet, and that at least a few of them (such as handheld phones/tablets) are not going to be capable of plugging in to an Ethernet cable.

hes trying to protect us

i like a the idea of a single ethernet cable just sitting in the lobby
laying on the ground for anyone to use

Okay so basically in each room there is an Ethernet cable. This way they can save energy so they don't have to power a router in every house the landlord owns in the estate.
But who the forget wants Ethernet, I want wifi for my phone/tablet. So me and my house mates have got wifi which we share.

That dude is probably only saving like a few pence on every electricity bill.

could you get an adapter for your computer that works as a router?

do those exist at all?
