Author Topic: My landlord doesn't want me to buy wifi?  (Read 2393 times)

If you wireless router/AP is good enough you shouldn't need a booster as long as the house isn't huge, 802.11n has a range of like 70 meters (230 feet) indoors
In my old neighborhood, a neighbor two houses down had an unsecured network, sometimes I used it when my internet was down, and the signal strength was pretty decent

Maybe he should get a short range router or something so the signal can't be picked up as easily  :cookieMonster:

From what it sounds like this person said, they probably already have a router connected to the ethernet that's running around the building.

If you plug in another router it may cause a minor problem, but if you were to just purchase an Access Point (Basically just the Wi-Fi without routing features) then you should be good to go.

Or he can get a normal one and turn down the signal strength
Just disable SSID broadcasting and you can't (unless you really know what you're doing) even know it's there

All you really have to do is change the IP the router uses, it'll cause problems if the default ip is the same as the ip the previous router uses

make it a hidden network and hide the router
only doing one of these is a bad idea

Just, before you go doing whatever, have a read through your contract with him. Just make sure they don't have anything stupid about it in the contract.
Last thing you want is to get caught and then lose your deposit or face eviction or what have you.

It's not likely, but landlords of student houses can be utter stuffs who will try to weasel you out of your deposit however they can.

buy a switch and an access point
most likely he just doesn't want a stuffload of networks clogging each other up (a real issue in apartment complexes because you only have 14 channels to choose from)

but overall this whole plot he has going on sounds really shady

Just buy a router anyway. Set it to not broadcast the signal and (s)he will have no way of knowing.

I didn't read the thread.

Make a network and name it something obscure and hide your router. Worked for me, my landlord only wanted me to use his stuffty 5mb/s Ethernet speed.
Also youtube is blocked, but not researchhub so...

I don't know what the forget im going to do for four more years.

literally if you're worried about blocked sites or them watching your history, look into the TOR network

i use it at school all the time to access websites. it's kinda slow, but i get to access anything basically
