It originated from old glass windows, which where thicker at the bottom. Concluding that this was the case because it must slowly flow is logical, but the actual cause is the production process: a sphere of blown glass was spun at high speeds until it flattened out, making a disc that was thicker at the edges, which is then cut into flat planes, and arranged with the thicker edge on the bottom for more stability
