Author Topic: I need a good, reliable server host.  (Read 2344 times)

Any suggestions?
I already know about CBMHost, so don't say "Try cbmhost".

No other manged hosting services exist for Blockland. Your best bet is to buy a VPS server and manage it yourself.

You can get a Windows VPS which will cost a ton, but is pretty straightforward to manage. Or you can get a Linux VPS, which gives you a much better price and is generally faster than Windows; but it comes at the cost of you having to learn to use Linux server. There are also a few issues with Wine that make it hard to maintain a 24/7 server. Debian is the best choice for hosting Blockland on Linux.

http://servermania.com/ - Well priced Windows servers (Poor DDoS policy)
http://linode.com/ - Great extremely high performance Linux servers (Edit: Better DDoS policy)
http://nfoservers.com/ - Other people recommend this, I don't know much about it.

I wouldn't recommend cbm anyway, good god.
I honestly don't know what to tell you.

why

Date, sometime in November. Server: You's Gladiator Arena. My speed, 70mb/s. Server uptime, N/A.
Spawned/going smoothly/OH JESUS CATASTROPHIC LAG/smooth/HOLY stuff NOT AGAIN/smooth/SOMEONE'S PISSING ON THE HOST AHHH/end.

Sounds like an issue with you. Server never lags for me even when I had 50+ players in the server

Otherwise...well...just use
cbm
I know the owner is having financial troubles and is asking for donations, but it doesn't mean it's becoming paid.
He's mostly relying on existing and longtime customers for the $$$.

NFO, you'll get your monies worth

Blockland dedi will run in wine forever and ever in my experience, but you do need to have an active X session for the wineconsole window.  Blockland's console doesn't work in a linux console.  Not a big deal though really.  Just have an xterm open running blockland.exe -dedicated.  No need for gnome or KDE or any huge, heavy window manager running.

What about ATFClan's service? They host the "Port's Quake" server, which has extremely low latency and perfect uptime so far.
It's not exactly public, though. If Warground is interested in providing more servers you'd need to contact him personally.

How do I set up a blockland VPS anyways?
I'm an idiot when it comes to hosting like this.

I'm running windows 8, also, just something to note.

If you're not tech literate, then you would definitely need to go with the Windows VPS if you can't get managed hosting. The Windows VPS is pretty easy, you get a remote desktop which you then control just like any other windows computer. To transfer files, you should look up a tutorial on how to set up Filezilla server (it's really simple).
