Author Topic: A custom master server  (Read 18123 times)

Just something i've been pondering. Opening up an alternative master server, maybe to host v20 servers? Just theorizing here..

EDIT: To the actual point, would it be possible / practical ?

badspot doesn't like people using previous versions

He doesn't like it, because anyone joining a old version with new client, they crash. Hence this idea, a separate master server for v20 servers

I'm like 90% sure you'd have to have access to the source code to do that. or find some way to modify the game on that level without the source. which might be possible, but I doubt it'd be really user-friendly

possible? completely (for badspot). practical? not in the slightest. why would you willingly downgrade to an inferior version of blockland, let alone host an entire master server for it?

I thought it was clear i meant for a standard user to host a custom master server for v20, so we could play with maps. Just something that was on my mind

I like the idea.... No new updates, might as well play older versions for a newer experience.

It isn't even that hard. Even now you can still play Blockland v20, but your servers wont show up on the server list.
Let me explain how this can be done:

1. Make a launcher bypass (.bat file) to prevent automatic updating.
2. Set up a server (such as a VPS) to provide a list of v20 servers
3. Write a client sided mod that you distribute to your friends along with the launcher bypass. This mod should:
 - Add a new GUI: v20 server list
 - Automatically connect to the new "custom master server" to send and receive info on v20 servers

I'm totally up for this. Please PM me if you are insterested in working on such a project.

on second thought, I think I would kind of like this idea.
badspot said the development was "forget it" anyways
BUT, it would kind of make a split in the community, and chances are, more people would use v20 than v21.

What about the I.P? Like you said, a client side gui, but that lists all the v20 servers.... then you just enter the I.P address of the server, and play.

I don't really know if that will work out tho...

This would have been a reasonable argument a year ago, but these days the community already seems to be very much split in two. I think this project would help reduce the tension between the two parts. If you like v21, play v21. If you like the old Blockland, you will have an alternative.

Possible, but since Badspot seems to have lost interest in Blockland, maybe he will let this one slide. In the end, if the players are satisfied and the game survives he earns more money from sales.

I am not sure what you mean. There can be a "Join server" button that simply makes you join the server.

That.

Why can't the GUI list just list of I.P of the servers and we can just enter it on the main one?
