Author Topic: some kid at my school got shocked at a pool (zipzap)  (Read 2800 times)

For being shocked? My neighbor got struck by lightning and walked out of the hospital un coma'd the next day.
Yes, for being shocked. Being struck by lightning is hardly similar to what the OP described. When hit by lightning, you are shocked for a fraction of a second as opposed to however many seconds it took to notice and tackle the kid. Secondly, lightning has a ton of voltage but hardly any amperage. Comparatively, manmade AC electrical systems are the other way around. Guess which hurts you substantially more? Amperage. Obviously volts aren't harmless, but they aren't the main concern. It's because of these two things that you hear about lightning strike survivors than people who survive high-powered electrical fences and wires.

Secondly, lightning has a ton of voltage but hardly any amperage.

"Most measurements have been in the range 5,000 to 20,000 amps but a famous strike just before the Apollo 15 launch in 1971 was measured at 100,000 amperes by magnetic links attached to the umbilical tower. Currents over 200,000 amps have been reported."

5,000 amps is enough to kill you, then kill your corpse, then kill your ghost.  People who survive a lightning strike are extremely lucky, and I imagine that if it were sustained for any length of time the number of survivors would be vastly lower.  We have to build specialized lightning generators to match the voltage and amperage of lightning strikes.  The reason electrocution is more dangerous isn't because manmade current has more kick, it's that it can keep it up far, far longer.

well the main cause of death is a heart attack or similar effect. if it goes on to long, your heart will give out from the stress and not pumping properly of course. you need dat blood and oxygen to the brain in regular doses. XD

the central nervous system (and oddly the brain as well) can take a hell of a lot of abuse from being electrified before they are damaged.

Huh. My sources lied to me then. :/

:/

That's loving concerning. In all the pools I've seen, we have hard plastic ladders to prevent slipping, burning (in case the metal gets really hot) and electrocution.
Those pools generally have stairs that you can just step out of the pool without touching anything. The pole can get hot, 'specially in the desert, but unless you're somewhat immobile you're not going to absolutely need to touch it.

I would like to know how suddenly it became electrified and no one else had touched it getting into the pool.

They FORCED him into a coma to heal?

10/10 would doctor again.

Sorry but that's a load of bullstuff. Most of my serious injuries/wounds heal while im aware of them.

Can you please just not talk about subjects you obviously have no knowledge about. Or maybe try doing some research instead of saying "nope doesnt exist stupid idea."

It is called a medically induced coma. They are used for extreme traumas when doctors suspect the brain is injured. While in the coma the body will heal itself and reduce risk of further injury. It is primarily used to stop the brain from swelling, causing permanent damage.

Shockingly, things you didn't know about actually exist in the world. Seriously, just Google it, it takes 2 seconds and makes you look like less of an idiot.

shoulda let him go and waited on some of that sweet compensation payment for stuffty pole placement near swimming area

Don't become a doctor, please

I accidentally put disagree in the vote. Did he look bad?

But guys, how the forget did the metal bar get electrified in the first place.

wait, sorry if im missing something, but why did the pole have a current? or do they not know?

It was probably hacked by a 1337 h4ck3r. B^)
