i want to believe i really do. i want a phone i can upgrade without having to buy a new phone all together. but this is a complete disaster. so many poor choices being made ARGH

Nope, not at all.
Motorola stated a few weeks after Phoneblocks took off that they had been working on Project Ara for quite some time.
They basically invited the Phoneblocks guy to work with them so they could get all of the popularity that Phoneblocks was currently getting.
